Rostov NPP: Volgodonsk Deputies and Public Visit Nuclear Power Plant

On July 31, 2012 a group of public representatives of Volgodonsk public – City Council deputies and members of the Civic and Public Chambers - made a tour to Rostov NPP.



At the nuclear power plant, the guests accompanied by Chief Engineer of the plant, Alexey Zhukov, and his Deputy for Operation, Alexander Katunin, visited the main control room and turbine island of the first and second power units, and inspected Units 3 and 4 construction sites.

The majority of the plant’s guests first were on the nuclear facility. It’s notable that among them also were the representatives of environmental organizations of the city.

The tour participants were interested most of all in the issues related to the safe operation of Rostov nuclear power plant, in particular, higher safety of the facility due to the events happened at Fukushima NPP. Nuclear experts accompanying the guests answered the questions, explained the principles of the plant’s operation and measures for ensuring the environmental and radiation safety.

Sharing his impressions from the viewed, a member of the Public Chamber of Volgodonsk and Chairman of “Volgo-Don” - the organization for assistance to protect the rights of victims of terrorist attacks, Irina Khalai, noted: “I’m impressed by the seen: by the enormous power of the facility, the order, which reigns everywhere, people who are responsible for the safe operation of this giant, how consistently and accurately they perform the most difficult tasks. I’m convinced that here everything and even more has been done for the safe operation. I have seen everything with my own eyes and now I have something to answer the opponents of nuclear energy.”

After learning the production, there was held a meeting of deputies and public of Volgodonsk with the nuclear power plant’s management, in which it was discussed about 30 issues related to the safe and efficient operation of the enterprise, as well cooperation of the city and the plant.

City Council Chairman, Peter Gorchanyuk, highly appreciated the efficiency of the plant and noted that the city authorities, public and Rostov NPP find more common points and integrating efforts for the benefit of the city. “Today we have taken many issues off from the agenda and identified areas for the further cooperation. By combining our efforts, we will be able to do much,” stressed Peter Gorchanyuk.

Director of Rostov NPP, Andrey Salnikov, thanked the guests for the visit and noted: “The staff of Rostov NPP is the residents of Volgodonsk. Here at the nuclear power plant we only work, but we live in the city. And all the city’s problems are our problems as well. That’s why we will solve them together. Rostov NPP is always ready to support the authorities and public in implementing joint projects aimed at the development of the city.”

Following the visit, the sides noted that the policy of transparency of the enterprise and readiness to a constructive dialogue brings its positive results.


 
Rostov NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The enterprise is situated on the bank of Tsimlyansk Reservoir at 13,5 km from Volgodonsk. NPP operates two power units with VVER-1000 reactors with the capacity of 1,000 MW. Unit 1 was commissioned in 2001 and Unit 2 – in December 2010. Power Units 3 and 4 have been being under construction since 2009.
