Rostov NPP: 4000 cubic meters of chemically demineralized water are prepared for commissioning works at power unit No 4 under construction

Distillation demineralizers (DD) of Rostov NPP have prepared the required supply of water for essential post-assembling operations – cleanout of the systems to the open reactor.

Cleanout operations provide for post-assembling flushing of the assembled pipelines and reactor equipment with chemically demineralized water. This is an important step in placing the nuclear power plant unit No 4 into operation.

“We have a separate DD building for the production of demineralized water; it has been built together with the beginning of operations of power unit No 3. It is also designed for water supply to starter unit No 4. At the moment, water supply is about 4000 cubic meters per day. This is enough to support all stages of commissioning works. Commissioning requirements imposed for water are very strict. It must meet all regulatory requirements, enterprise’s standards of water and chemical regime”, the Head of the Chemical Department of Rostov NPP Viktor Pushkarev said about the water preparation for flushing operations.

For the demineralization procedure the water taken from Tsimlyansk reservoir goes through the system of special treatment.

Then, before entering the zone of commissioning operations it passes multistage quality control in the chemical department laboratory equipped with modern high-tech equipment.

The power block No. 4 is planned to be launched in 2017.

The Rostov NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based at the Tsymlianskoe reservoir shore 13.5 km away from Volgodonsk. The NPP operates VVER-1000 reactors with the installed capacity of 1000 megawatts. The power block No.1 commenced commercial operations in 2001, with the second and the third power blocks to follow in 2010 and on September 17, 2015, respectively. The power block No. 4 is currently under construction.
