Rostov NPP Nuclear Power Engineers Paid Tribute to Memory of Chernobyl NPP Accident Victims

On April 26 on the Day Commemorating the Victims of the Chernobyl NPP Accident Aftermath, the Volgodonsk nuclear power engineers took part in the rally dedicated to the sorrowful date.

Near the monument to the victims of the Chernobyl NPP Accident, there have met the Accident aftermath liquidators, representatives of Rostov NPP, Volgodonsk Administration and City Duma, as well as citizens of the city. They paid a tribute with a minute of silence to the memory of the deceased, and laid flowers at the memorable sign.

And on the eve of the memorable day, on April 25, the representatives of the nuclear power plant management met at the Public Information Centre of Rostov NPP with the Chernobyl clean-up veterans from Volgodonsk – members of the city public organization “Luquidator”, which is under the support of Rostov NPP.

The Chief Engineer of the plant Alexey Zhukov handed the guests memorable award pins for taking part in the Chernobyl NPP Accident aftermath clean-up. After the awarding ceremony, the rally participants watched a film about the Chernobyl NPP Accident liquidators, based on the documentary chronicles of those tragic days.

Addressing to the people of the meeting, Alexey Zhukov noted: “the 26th of April is a memorable for all of us date. Today we remind and thank those, who did all possible to clean-up the aftermath of that Accident.”
From Volgodonsk, about 600 people went to the disaster area for the liquidation of the Chernobyl radiation catastrophe. 83 employees of Rostov NPP worked at clean-up of the Accident from 1986 to 1990. Like many cities in Russia, Volgodonsk admitted hundreds of families evacuated from contaminated areas. The nuclear power engineers and citizens of the city did their best to make Volgodonsk become their native city. Nowadays, the nuclear power plant employs 24 workers who took part in rectification of the consequences of the Chernobyl Disaster.
 
Rostov NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The enterprise is situated on the bank of Tsimlyansk Reservoir at 13,5 km from Volgodonsk. The NPP operates two power units with VVER-1000 reactors with the capacity of 1,000 MW. The Unit 1 was commissioned in 2001 and the Unit 2 – in December 2010. The Power Units 3 and 4 are nowadays under construction.
