Rosenergoatom: Moscow Finishes VIII International Sci-Tech Conference ТSafety, Efficiency and Economics of Nuclear Power Generation IndustryУ

On May 25, 2012 the VIII International Sci-Tech Conference ТSafety, Efficiency and Economics of the Nuclear Power Generation IndustryУ (MNTK-2012), organized by Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC, finished its work in Moscow.

This event, according to the opinion of the organizers, contributes to solution of the most pressing challenges related to ensuring and increasing of the safety in operation of nuclear power plants, increasing of the installed capacity utilization factor (ICUF), extending the lifetime and decommissioning of power units, as well as improving economic efficiency and looking for the ways to develop the nuclear power generation industry.

The number of participants reached the record - over 700 Russian and foreign specialists from 17 countries of the world.
They represented dozens of companies, organizations and enterprises of the nuclear power generation industry, discussed the achievements of the modern nuclear power generation industry on such issues as: NPPsХ operation with VVER, RBMK, BN model reactors, emergency preparedness and protection against radiation, upgrading and extension of nuclear power plants, radiation safety and environment, radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel handling (RAW and SNF), development and economics of the nuclear power generation industry of Russia, and many others.

MNTK-2012 was attended by the representatives of Rosatom State Corporation, Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC, IAEA, WANO, scientific and research and design organizations of Russia, CIS, Eastern and Western Europe, other regions of the world, different Russian and foreign large enterprises of the nuclear power generation industry.

On the first day of the conference, there was a plenary meeting, where the representatives of the nuclear power industry companies delivered their reports.

During the second day, on May 24, the participants worked by sections, formed according to certain industrial and technical fields. The topics covered almost the whole range of problems of the modern nuclear power generation industry. Within each section, there have been delivered reports on the specifically stated topics.

For the discussion, the specialists suggested such high priority issues as: NPPsХ operation with VVER, RBMK, BN model reactors, upgrading and extension of nuclear power plants, radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel handling (RAW and SNF), decommissioning of units, operation of NPPs at the electric power and capacity market, and many others. The specialists also considered the problems of radiation safety of the nuclear power generation industry facilities, ecology, and issues related to the environment protection.

On the third, the last day of the conference work, in the building of RIA NOVOSTI (Russian International News Agency), there was held a press-conference with the participation of Vladimir Asmolov - First Deputy General Director of Rosenergoatom Concern, D.Sc. in engineering, professor, President of WANO, and Miroslav Lipar - Head of IAEA Operational Safety section.
Speaking to the representatives of the leading publications, Miroslav Lipar marked that for that day IAEA and Russia have developed good practice in organization and conducting of OSART mission at nuclear power plants. Worldwide, it is recognized as a powerful tool for independent assessment of operational safety at nuclear power plants, and is aimed at further development and improvement of NPPsХ safety by disseminating best practices.
ТIn 2004 on the same MNTK, there was achieved the agreement that we would start conducting of OSART missions at the Russian nuclear power plans, which would be held once in three years. In 2005 the first such mission was conducted at Rostov NPP, in 2008 Р at Balakovo NPP, and in 2011 Р at Smolensk NPP. According to the results of all the inspections, we got very good results,У informed Miroslav Lipar, marking that all the Russian NPPs had prepared themselves for the conducting of such missions.

ТAt the end of each of such OSART mission we give comments and recommendations on improvement, and then in a year and a half we check whether a plant has taken them into account. Such final checks have already passed at Rostov and Balakovo NPPs, and what these plants achieved in this sense Р is the best results in the world,У stressed M.Lipar. He also informed that in 2014 conducting of OSART missions was scheduled for Kola NPP, and in 2015 Р for Novovoronezh NPP.

The next International Sci-Tech conference is scheduled for 2014.

Rosenergoatom Concern includes all 10 nuclear power plants of Russia, which have the status of the branches of the Concern, as well as the enterprises ensuring the activity of the power generating company.

In total, at 10 NPPs of Russia, there are operated 33 power units: 17 power units have VVER model reactors (among them 11 units have VVER-1000 model reactors, and 6 units have VVER-440 model reactors of various modifications); 15 units have pressurized-tube reactors (11 units - RBMK-1000 model reactors, four units - EGP-6 model reactors); 1 unit has the fast fission sodium cooled reactor BN-600.

The electric power generation rate of the nuclear power plants of Russia amounts to 16,6 %.
