August 14, 2013 became an important milestone in the history not only of the Smolensk region, but also of all Russia. In seven kilometers from the Smolenskay nuclear power plant, on a small platform near Bogdanovo in the Roslavlsky area was taken the first step, conducting to future of the Smolenskaya NPP-2 - drilling of the first prospecting well.

In December, 2012 the director general of "ROSATOM" corporation Sergey Kiriyenko signed the order on the beginning of works on construction of the second Smolenskay nuclear power plant. Later a little more than half was started counting  of a new grandiose building Р specialists of the Desnogorsk project and surveying branch of JSC "Atomenergoproekt" began prospecting works and carried out the first drilling of the soil on a place where construction of station is expected.

"We have been waiting for this event for a long time. Drilling of the first prospecting well is actually the first peg on a place where there will be the Smolenskay NPP-2",- the director of the nuclear station Andrey Petrov emphasized.

The construction of the new station according to plans will begin in 2016, before it is necessary to carry out considerable amount of prospecting and project works.

According to the deputy director general - director of designing of JSC "Atomenergoproekt" Ruben Topchiyan, for the new station will be chosen a place from three competitive platforms located in a neighborhood of the former villages Pyatidvorka, Holmets (the Roslavlsky area) and the Stage (the Pochinkovsky area). But already now it is possible to tell that the platform in the area Pyatidvorok is more preferable on all indicators: it is closer than the others to the operating nuclear power plant and here are optimum existing construction base, hydrogeological conditions.

In the nineties last century we already conducted its preproject researches and we possess rather large supply of the share documents confirming possibility of placement in this territory of nuclear station, proceeding from that project which here is planned to implement",- Ruben Migruzhanovich speaks.

So, the beginning of the construction of the 21st century Smolensk has been supposed. It is quite difficult to revaluate those prospects which will open in front of Desnogorsk, nearby areas and all Smolensk region construction of the new nuclear power plant. "We look forward to the beginnings of the construction of the Smolenskay NPP-2. It will open enormous prospects for development of our region: new workplaces, opportunities for allied industries of the industry, social and economic, infrastructure and innovative development", - the Head of municipality "Roslavlsky Area" Alexander Ivanov is sure.

According to plans, start-up of the first power unit of replacement station is planned for 2022. Today the Smolensk region is returning to times of great Soviet buildings when significant for all country industrial and energy giants grew one by one.

The Smolensk nuclear power plant is a branch of JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". SAES annually issues in a country power supply system on the average about 20 billion kilowatts of hours of the electric power that constitutes about 13% of the energy developed in Rosenergoatom concern, and more than 80%, the Smolensk region made by the power entities.
