New innovative equipment will be used to study the microstructure of metals at Rostov NPP

The specialists of the Metal Flaw Detection and Technical Control Department (MFD&TCD) of Rostov NPP have started the operation of the new equipment Р multipurpose inverted optical microscope.

The equipment is designed for metal microstructure research. This model allows us to study objects with optical magnification up to 2000x. The microscopes previously used in metallography team of MFD&TCD were able to magnify up to 1000x.

The microscope is equipped with an inbuilt color camera and software for image processing and analysis. The camera is connected to a PC and a color laser printer, which allows printing color images of obtained pictures quickly. The software includes database for storage and quick search of pictures taken.

According to the Head of MFD&TCD Sergei Yurkin the usage of modern microscope saves time for production and analysis of metal microstructure pictures (the duration of the development and photoprinting process in comparison with printing, the image on the printer, structural components and defect measurement are done with the help of the software), and allows to quickly draw up study protocols for equipment elements.

The usage of new microscope has allowed to abandon the acquisition of additional heavy equipment (photomicrographic attachments with the film and the plate camera, photographical magnifying apparatus, images developing equipment, gloss agent, or contact printing machine), and the need for additional room for a darkroom equipment.

MFD&TCDХs Metallography team specialists have been trained to work with the microscope and received their certificates.

The Rostov NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based at the Tsymlianskoe reservoir shore 13.5 km away from Volgodonsk. The NPP operates VVER-1000 reactors with the installed capacity of 1000 megawatts. The power block No.1 commenced commercial operations in 2001, with the second and the third power blocks to follow in 2010 and on September 17, 2015, respectively. The power block No. 4 is currently under construction.
