Metropolitan of Rostov and Novocherkassk Mercury Pays Call on Rostov NPP
On June 2, 2012 Metropolitan of Rostov and Novocherkassk Mercury arrived with working trip to Rostov NPP. It was the first visit of the Primate to Volgodonsk and the nuclear power plant after his assignment to the post of Metropolitanate Head at the end of last year.
A doctor of theology, member of the Supreme Church Council of the Russian Orthodox Church, Chairman of the Synodal Department for Religious Education and Catechesis, Lord Mercurius met with the management of the nuclear power plant as part of his trip, and served a short prayer in the plantХs church of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin Theotokos.
Along with Director of the plant, Andrey Salnikov, bishop of Rostov and Novocherkassk visited the main control unit of Unit 2. Metropolitan Mercurius was interested in the design of the plant, system of safe and stable operation, progress of new power unitsХ construction. In an interview with Director of the plant, bishop Mercurius discussed the questions of the revival and strengthening of Orthodox traditions, awareness of personal responsibility at each working place.
Sharing his impressions about the visit to the nuclear power plant, arch-flamen said: ТIХm very glad that the Lord has permitted me to visit Rostov NPP, get acquainted with the labour of the responsible team of this plant. All what happens here is done with a sense of great responsibility to our Motherland and people, and the same hope for the LordХs mercy. It is these two qualities, which should be inherent to each person of our state. The order I saw at Rostov NPP may serve as a sample for each one of us in creation and responsibility.У
He also stressed: ТDirector of the plant, Andrey Alexandrovich Salnikov and me touched a topic of the national idea, as well. He formulated a part of the idea the following way: it is a sense of my responsibility at my working place. And if this sense of responsibility to the Motherland, family, close people, business, which you are engaged in, becomes a necessity for everyone, then our country will be in order.У
Bishop Mercurius thanked the management and staff of Rostov NPP on behalf of Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia, Cyril, and in his own account for the comprehensive aid and assistance in establishment of Don Metropolitanate and Volgodonsk Episcopate. ТBy this you provide an invaluable service in formation of the spiritual component of the state,У said the Lord. ТAnd if we are able to reconstruct the spiritual component in full, based on historical, cultural, spiritual, religious traditions, we will be able to hope for the future.У
Rostov NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The enterprise is situated on the bank of Tsimlyansk Reservoir at 13,5 km from Volgodonsk. NPP operates two power units with VVER-1000 reactors with the capacity of 1,000 MW. Unit 1 was commissioned in 2001 and Unit 2 Р in December, 2010. Units 3 and 4 are under construction, their start up is scheduled for 2014 and 2017, respectively.
