Leningrad NPP: the tests for leak-tight integrity of the personnel escape lock were successful at power unit No 1 under construction

Local tests of emergency personnel escape lock have been successfully done at Leningrad NPPХs VVER-1200 power unit No 1; this is an important element of the power plant leak-tight enclosure system (localization safety system).

ТWe conducted pneumatic tests of the elementsХ leak-tight integrity - by means of compressors we applied the pressure air into the inner cavity of the lock, slowly raised pressure to the required value, and incubated the cavity at this pressure for one hour. At the same time with the help of soap bubble test we were controlling the leak-tight integrity of the connections and field welds. During the entire period of monitoring the pressure remained unchanged; no leaks were found in welds and flanged connections. The lock is recognized as a leak-tight, complying technical requirements, and operableУ, Alexandr Beschastnov, the Deputy Head of the Reactor Shop Department of Leningrad NPP under construction, said.

He also explained that before going on the pneumatic tests an entire range of other activities had been carried out: assembling, commissioning and putting into operation of the lock electrical equipment had been completed, its electric actuators had been energized under an operational standard scheme, the compressed air system had been assembled and prepared for operation, lighting had been done, operational communication between all test participants had been provided.

Vitaliy Shutykov, the Head of the Reactor Shop Department of Leningrad NPP said, ТToday we are at a stage, when constructed and assembled systems and elements of the power plant are being tested and prepared for operational readiness. The specialists are checking whether they conform to the project standards and characteristics.У

The personnel escape locks (main one and emergency one) are used in the construction of the power unit, during its operation, and during the repair of the equipment. They are intended for the personnel moving from the leaking into the leak-tight zone and back.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
