Leningrad NPP: fuel assembly (FA) imitators were put into reactor zone of the first nuclear unit under construction

On 10 December 2016 the one of the milestones of 2016 was accomplished on the first nuclear unit under construction of Leningrad NPP Р all 163 fuel assembly imitators were put into nuclear unit. The procedure was carried out for less than 8 days.

An imitator set with FAs is necessary to simulate the reactor core geometry and verify the hydraulic characteristics of reactor unit. The imitators are used instead of regular fuel assemblies in period of start-up and adjustment works, and they repeat exactly the construction of real FAs by size, weight and construction materials (except nuclear fuel).

ТFirst, we have worked through the route under which the delivery of FA imitators from fresh fuel storage to trestle of transporting gateway and further to the containment of nuclear unit is executed, and then we have loaded the first FAsУ, Vitaliy Demchenko, the Deputy Head of the Department on transport and handling equipment and nuclear unit repair of Leningrad NPP under construction, said. ТThe imitators are transported in transportation casks in 27 pieces. The loading process itself is executed with usage of refueling machine that places FAs from fresh fuel storage to nuclear unit coreУ.

ТIn the complex process of FAs loading all the procedures were involved Р transport on the site area and in nuclear unit building, process control systems, mechanisms of refueling machine, cooperation of departments and contractorУ, Vladimir Pereguda, the Plant Manager of Leningrad NPP, emphasized. ТNow I can confidently say that all the chain works successfullyУ.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
