Kursk NPP: WANO experts gave their recommendations on practical application of probabilistic risk assessment at the enterprise

Practical application of probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) while operating nuclear plants was discussed at Kursk NPP in the course of technical support mission (TSM) of WANO MC on 13-17 February, 2017.

A team of international experts from Kozloduy NPP (Bulgaria) and WANO MC, as well as specialists of Rosenergoatom Concern JSC, Leningrad NPP, Smolensk NPP, the Research and Development Centre of NRS Rostekhnadzor, and NIKIET JSC provided the presentation on topical issues of PRA development. They debriefed and discussed the reports of Kursk NPPХs specialists.

During mastering the mutual experience and the following discussion the missionХs participants have elaborated the specific recommendations for improvements in the area of safety provision.

Within the framework of the mission there was a seminar with the participation of PRA group personnel of the Kursk NPP on application of probabilistic risk assessment to evaluate the NPP performance.

ТMany-sided discussion where the scientists and supervision bodiesХ representatives took part along with nuclear experts helps on the basis of international experience to elaborate decisions on new directions of PRA use due to regulatory documents issuanceУ, the TSM Head, WANO MC Advisor Galim Musim noted.

ТProbabilistic risk assessment is one of the instruments that allows to see what we have achieved and where we should go in order to increase the characteristics of power units safetyУ, Aleksandr Semchenko, the Deputy Chief Engineer on Support Service and Quality, said.

ТWe have involved the international experts, and PRA group personnel of the Kursk NPP to have a look at up-to-date methods of probabilistic risk assessment and ways of their application at our plantУ, Aleksandr Viktorovich continued. ТOur young specialists have received a bungle of knowledge to apply in actual workУ.

The experts have introduced the preliminary results of the mission to the Kursk NPP management.

WANO Moscow Centre will present the official report in a month after the ending of technical support mission. Within a year after the TSM execution the international organization will ask Kursk NPP to assess the progress (effectiveness) in the area where the TSM was executed.

In the current year it is scheduled to execute the TSM on the topic ТThe system of operating efficiency indicatorsУ and a Peer Review at Kursk NPP.

*WANO is the World Association of organizations С the NPP operators, that is the organizations that operate NPPs. It is nonprofit, nongovernmental organization; itХs not a supervision authority. WANOХs mission is to increase the safety and reliability of NPPs in the world to the maximum level by expanding joint efforts to assess, compare with the best achievements, and enhance their operation through mutual support, information exchange and positive experience usage.
WANO MC (Moscow Centre) unites the representatives of 25 NPPs of Russian construction that are in industrial operation in 11 countries. In total 118 companies from 35 countries where 210 NPPs operate 541 power units (in stage of operation, construction and decommissioning) are the members of WANO.

The technical support missionХs task includes the assistance of WANO members in search of the best ways of workplace problems solving, safety and reliability enhancement. The TSM is conducted on a voluntary basis on request of the company С the nuclear plant.

Probabilistic risk assessment of NPP (PRA) is a system analysis in the course of which the models of possible events at plantХs power unit are developed, including the accidents, and the values of probabilistic indicators of nuclear and radiation safety are defined.

The Kursk NPP, as part of the "Rosenergoatom Concern", is included into the electricity division of the State Corporation "Rosatom". The station is located 40 km south-west of the city Kursk on the left bank of Seym. The NPP has four operating units with RBMK RBMK-1000 reactors with total capacity of 4 million KW of electricity. Power units were connected to the unified energy system of the country in 1976, 1979, 1983 and 1985.
