Kola NPP: the 1st power unit is 38 years old and the city satellite is 20

On June 25, 2011, citizens of Polyarnye Zori will celebrate a triple holiday: 20 years since Polyarnye Zori received the city status, the 38th anniversary of Kola NPP power unit No. 1 start-up and the Youth Day.

According to the opinion of Nuclear Plant Director Vasily Omelchuk, the city and the enterprise are the united whole. ТWe exist and function together, do the same business and take care of our city development and prosperity. In the course of almost forty years Kola NPP works according the principles of provision of safety and care of ecology, considering the improvement of the citizensХ life quality, our society development and the population health concern to be the most important targetsУ, he noted.

In the program of the holiday events there is a concert with the participation of creative groups from Olenegorsk, Apatity, Kandalakshi, Zelenoborsk and Umba, a traditional field-and-track racing, parade of perambulators, loved by everyone, automobilesХ test-drive, festival of youth culture, contest, games, and quizzes.

The history of Polyarnye Zori settlement started from the development of the industrial site for construction of Kola nuclear plant. Today Kola NPP is one of the most efficient in the family of Russian nuclear plants. It produces the most part of the district electric power; industry and the working places of Murmansk region and the Karelia Republic depend on the kilowatt-hours of Kola nuclear plant.

A set of measures, allowing the prolongation of power units Nos. 1, 2 and 3 service lives, has been successfully realized. The works on the 4th power unit service life prolongation are approaching.

The work on realization of the projects, allowing to use Kola nuclear plant capacity to the full extent, is in progress. That will contribute to the development of the manufactures of electric power generation: Murmansk transportation junction, mining industry and development of Shtokman minefield.

Kola NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is located 200 km to the south of Murmansk on the bank of Lake Imandra. Power unit No.1 of Kola NPP was commissioned in 1973. Currently, the plant operates 4 power units with VVER-type reactors. Each reactor has capacity of 440 mW. Kola NPP supplies power for Murmansk region and Karelia.
