Kola NPP Р Guarantor of Environmental Safety

At the VI All-Russian Conference ТEcology and ProductionУ, Kola NPP has become an award winner of the Т100 Best Companies of Russia. Ecology and Environmental ManagementУ contest in the nominations of the ТReputation and ReliabilityУ, and the ТGolden Bough of the PlanetУ. The award ceremony took place during the VI All-Russian Conference.

The nomination ТReputation and ReliabilityУ was awarded to the enterprise for providing environmental safety at the production. The contest jury noted that the nuclear power plantХs activity was organized in such a way as to most effective ensure the preservation of the state of all natural systems of the Kola Peninsula. This is achieved through the strict compliance with the requirements of the environmental legislation and continuous monitoring of the environment. Also the activities of Kola NPP were noted in the preservation of the balanced ecosystem of the Arctic Circle: the enterprise picked up award in the second contest nomination the ТGolden Bough of the PlanetУ.

For the personal contribution to the nature preservation of the North and environmental safety, the contest jury awarded the Director of Kola nuclear power plant Vasiliy Omelchuk the title of the ТEnvironmentalist of the YearУ (in the nomination the ТPerson of the yearУ).

*The conference was held in St. Petersburg from 13 to 16 April under the auspices of the Federation Council on the Agrarian and Food policy and ecosystem exploitation, committees of the State Duma for natural resources, natural management, ecology and education. The basic topics of the conference were issues of development of the Russian legislation in the field of environment protection; upgrading of penalties for environmental offences; development of legal and economic mechanisms pepping the business entities to reduce the negative impact on the environment, including the introduction of advanced technologies reducing pollutant emissions.

Kola NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is located 200 km to the south of Murmansk on the bank of Lake Imandra. It produces about 60% of electricity of Murmansk region. Currently, the plant operates 4 power units with VVER-type reactors. Each reactor has capacity of 440 MW. Kola NPP supplies power for Murmansk region and Karelia.
