Kalinin NPP: the simulation area loading has been accomplished at power unit No. 4 under construction

The simulation area loading at Kalinin NPP power unit No. 4 under construction took less than 6 days. The first ITVS (simulation fuel assembly) was loaded into the reactor of power unit No. 4 in the evening of May 18, and at daytime of May 24 the works were fully completed.

The simulation area loading is one of the most important commissioning works before carrying out hydraulic testing and circulation washing of the first circuit.

The simulation area loading was performed by means of a fuel-handling machine, which had completely undergone the debugging, and is currently operating in the nominal (automation cycling) mode. Totally, 163 ITVSs were loaded.

The set of fuel assembliesХ simulators imitates the geometric characteristics of the reactorХs active area. Their loading is necessary in order to exclude damage and pollution of the fuel assemblies at the stages of circulatory washing and running of the first circuit equipment during commissioning. The parts of the fuel assemblies set do not contain radiation hazardous components.

Kalinin NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is situated in the north of Tver region in Udomlya district. Kalinin nuclear power plant comprises three operating power units with pressurized water reactors (VVER-1000) of 1,000 mW capacity each. Power unit No. 4 is under construction now and is to be commissioned in 2011.
