Kalinin NPP: the beginning of the simulation area loading

The first ITVS (simulation fuel assembly) has been loaded into the reactor of power unit No. 4 of Kalinin NPP. The most important operation on the course of the commissioning started on May 18 at 10:03 p.m.

The simulation area assembly precedes one of the key events of the summer beginning Рconduction of hydraulic testing and circulation washing of the first circuit.

The simulation area loading is performed by means of a fuel-handling machine which has completely undergone the debugging and is already carrying out operations in a nominal (automation cyclic) mode. The completion of work on simulation area loading is planned in the course of about 8 days, in all 163 ITVSs are to be loaded. Before the operation beginning, the +36 mark of the reactor compartment and the bays of the cooling ponds and the wet overload Тfor the cleannessУ had been checked, the appropriate act had been signed on May 18.

The package of the fuel assembliesХ simulators imitates the geometric characteristics of the reactorХs active area. Their loading is necessary in order to exclude the damage and pollution of the fuel assemblies at the stages of circulatory washing and running of the first circuit equipment in the period of the commissioning. The parts of the fuel assembliesХ package do not contain radiation hazardous components.

The installation and setup organizations are responsible for the performed operation according to the program. The work of these organizations is under the control of the Kalinin NPP subdivisions Р the departments of centralized repair, radiation safety and reliability, and reactor compartment No. 2.

Kalinin NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is situated in the north of Tver region in Udomlya district. Kalinin nuclear power plant comprises three operating power units with pressurized water reactors (VVER-1000) of 1,000 mW capacity each. Power unit No. 4 is under construction now and is to be commissioned in 2011.

Timely information about the radiation environment near Russian NPPs and other objects of the nuclear industry is available in the site www.russianatom.ru.
