Kalinin NPP: WANO experts gave their recommendations on organization of safety and health protection at the enterprise

From 6 to 10 February 2017 the experts of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) from Russia and Ukraine were at the Kalinin NPP as a part of the technical support mission on the subject of ТThe role of management workplace walkabout in the increase of safety and health protection level. Effectiveness. Main aspectsУ.

The technical support mission was executed on the enterpriseХs request. This is not an inspection, but a joint, two-sided work with the aim to take the NPP activity to a new level of quality.

For five days the representatives of Moscow WANO had been monitoring the execution of working operations, examining the records, executing the workplace walkabout, holding interviews with the KNPPХs managers and specialists.


The experts had examined the experience of Kalinin NPP operation in an unbiased manner, had given their recommendations on efficiency of walkabout, and assessment of potential danger of injuries, personal protective equipment appliance, etc. They had also noted the positive aspects of KNPP operation, for instance, the maintenance and readiness for work of portable emergency mitigating post-Fukushima equipment, the on-site marking of the discovered defects, the usage of automatically closing installations on the stairways.

In his turn, the Kalinin NPP Plant Manager Viktor Ignatov thanked the specialists of WANO for their help in independent examination of safety and health protection system. He noted the importance of the recommendations given by the experts on the further improvement of the Kalinin NPP safety and health protection system.

The World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) unifies all the organizations managing the NPPs. The main goal of its activity is to increase the safety and reliability of operating nuclear plants across the world. It has four regional centres: in Moscow, Atlanta, Paris, and Tokyo. The coordinating centre is situated in London.

The Kalininskaya nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located in the north of the Tver region in the Udomelskiy area. There are four power units with water-cooled power reactors (VVER-1000) with installed capacity of 1000 MW each in the structure of the Kalininskaya nuclear power station.
