During the 10 years of operating the radioactive effluent recycling complex the Kolsk NPP has managed to cut the amount of radioactive effluents to be buried 500 times and more

On June 30, 2016, it has been 10 years since the radioactive effluent recycling complex of the Kolsk NPP, a unique facility in the Russian nuclear power industry, has been launched. The complex is designed to extract radioactive effluents accumulated throughout the NPPХs operation from the storages, purify and transfer them into a safe state. The end product of the still bottomsХ recycling Р a saline fusion Р does not refer to the radioactive waste and may become an input for generating useful chemical compounds in the future.

By the first anniversary, the nuclear power experts have achieved a brand new production level of over 300 tons of net output annually with the amount of radioactive waste to be buried cut down 500 times and more. This ground-breaking accomplishment attributes to the updated radioactive effluentsХ purification system, launching new oxygen and ozone generation points and filtering equipment along with the technological processes optimization.

The fact that the ion-selective purification technology is secure and reliable opens up great prospects for this system being used at other NPPs all over the world. Launching the radioactive effluent recycling complex at a transpolar NPP was the first step towards the innovative utilization of the radioactive effluents, with the amounts of radioactive waste to be buried reduced significantly. The Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC has invested over 2 billion rubles over 12 years to establish the facility.

The Kolsk NPP is an affiliate of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC and is based 200 km to the south from the city of Murmansk, at the Imandra lakeside. The plant produces around 60% of the Murmansk Region electric power. It has 4 operational power blocks with VVER-type reactors, each of them having capacity of 440 megawatt. The Kolsk NPP supplies electric power to the Murmansk Region and Karelia.
