Delegation of Public Environmental Council representatives visited Leningrad NPP

April 14, 2011 Delegation of Public Environmental Council representatives of Leningrad Region Governor visited Leningrad NPP with the purpose of getting acquainted with the nuclear plant state and safety level within the framework of public inspections, initiated by Rosatom State Corporation.

Representatives of a number of public ecological organizations Р North-West and St. Petersburg subdivisions of Green Cross and Red Wave, Sosnovy Bor movement called Native Bank, journalists of districts information agencies and printed issues of ecological trend, film crews of St. Petersburg, Leningrad district and Sosnovy Bor four district channels took part in the delegation. Leningrad nuclear plant Director V. I. Pereguda, Deputies of Chief Engineer: on operation Р C. I. Gubin, on radiation safety Р A. I. Epikhin, on safety and reliability Р I. N. Lozhnikov - met with public representatives and journalists and appeared with detailed reports.

ТWe are open for communication and are interested in itУ, Vladimir Pereguda said, opening the meeting. In the communication process he made the meeting participants acquainted with the basic principles, assemblies and the technology of the plant work, safety systems in detail. He also demonstrated graphically the additional safety systems, installed within the modernization process, and told them about the program of the further improvement of nuclear, technical, radiation, fire and physical safety in more detail. ТUndoubtedly, these measures require material expensesУ, Vladimir Ivanovich underlined, Тbut the issue of the plant safe operation is considered to be the main and top-priority oneУ.

An expandable excursion on one of the plant operating power units lead by Deputy Chief Engineer Sergey Gubin was provided for the visitors. Public representatives visited the second power unit reactor compartment, the reactor unit control room, turbine equipment and unit on the whole. They saw, heard and touched the turbine and generator bodies in the turbine hall with their hands.

Besides, the public inspectors went along the plant territories in order to see the facilities and everything demonstrated to them during the presentation with their own eyes: additional safety systems, reserve assembles - pump and diesel stations.

Having returned from the industrial site, Member of Public Environmental Council of Leningrad Region Governor, Chairman of North-West Green Cross Y. S. Shevtchuk noted: ТI liked the openness we were welcomed at Leningrad plant with. We were shown practically everything we wanted to. We have seen the modernization results and what had been changed in the course of the years of operation, made sure that the plant management takes all the necessary measures to provide the safetyУ.

According to Y. S. ShevtchukХs opinion, LNPP management does not lose vigilance, do not stop at the level reached and goes on considering new ways to achieve even more high safety level. ТWe much liked the way the atomists answered various questions legibly and clearly. I estimate the way we were welcomed, talked to, and the efforts contributed to LNPP for the sake of its safety highly. And I will do my best to tell about the visit as many people as possible. I will report about it at the next session of Public Environmental CouncilУ.

The Member of Public Environmental Council of Leningrad Region Governor, Member of District Public Chamber of Leningrad Region Governor, Chairman of district subdivision of The SUPPORT of Russia Pan-Russian Social Organization G. M. Belikova is planning to appear with the report, that LNPP pays special attention to the problems of safety, in Environmental Council: ТAfter the notorious events in Japan there was a great interest to visit Leningrad NPPУ, Galina M. Belikova said. ТI have no doubt that LNPP has a very high level of technological process organization. The facts heard from the DirectorХs report and seen during the visit only proved for the fact that St. Petersburg citizens can take matters easy. According to our visit results I will make up my own report for the Council and will speak with full confidence and to my relatives as well, that we have nothing to be afraid of and are under reliable protectionУ.

The next public inspection at Leningrad NPP will be held in May. Finnish journalists will ТinspectХ the plant.
