By the end of 2016, the overaged reciprocating compressors at the Rostov NPP will be substituted with the modern helical ones

The nitrogenous-oxygen and plant-wide compression station operation site at the Rostov NPP is undergoing the process of compressors substitution. The obsolete reciprocating compressors are replaced with the modern helical ones as a part of the modernization program.

ТThe old compressors were installed at the NPP in 1989, and have already exhausted their life spanУ, Vladimir Chebotarev, the head of the Rostov NPP supporting systems workshop, said. ТThe new equipment will cater for more effective equipment performance, which will result in safer power blocks operationУ.

The old and the new compressors have different process scheme. The obsolete reciprocating ones required 6 cubic meters of technical water per hour to cool the compressor. Additionally, the new helical compressors are more reliable and easy to run and boast longer service intervals.

ТThe five reciprocating compressors used to consume 720 cubic meters of water daily. The helical compressors are designed in a different way, and what they need to cool them is air, not water. Three out of five compressors have already been assembled, with the other two to follow in December. Besides, those two that are to be installed in December have electric motors with frequency regulation, which means that the electric motorХs and the screw pairХs spin speed is set depending on a specific need in compressed air. The compressorХs power intake is changed to make the most of the power consumptionУ, Artem Zatiamin, the technical supervision engineer at the Rostov NPPХs supporting systems workshop, noted when explaining the way the new equipment operates.

The equipment consists of foreign components delivered by a Russian company, the official representative of Gardner Denver Р OOO Professionalniy Instrument.

At the moment, the supporting systems workshop takes care of a large piece of work in equipment modernization. Apart from the compressors substitution, the nitrogenous-oxygen compression station undergoes the installation and configuration of the air separation unit.

The Rostov NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based at the Tsymlianskoe reservoir shore 13.5 km away from Volgodonsk. The NPP operates VVER-1000 reactors with the installed capacity of 1000 megawatts. The power block No.1 commenced commercial operations in 2001, with the second and the third power blocks to follow in 2010 and on September 17, 2015, respectively. The power block No. 4 is currently under construction.
