Balakovo and Zaporizhia NPPs: Cooperation to Be Continued

Yesterday, on August 28, the official delegation of Zaporizhia nuclear power plant led by its General Director, Vyacheslav Tischenko, paid a visit to Balakovo NPP. The Ukrainian colleagues arrived to sign a new agreement on cooperation between the plants. This agreement, as well as the previous one, is for five years. 

At the meeting, heads of the plants-partners exchanged the information on the current situation at Zaporizhia and Balakovo NPPs; attention was paid to the issues of emergency preparedness and response activities in case of emergency, and the implementation of post-Fukushima measures. 

The Ukrainian delegation was very impressed by the personnel training centre of the nuclear power plant, where they viewed a full-scale simulator, training classes and acquainted themselves with technical guides. 

At the end of the one-day visit, both sides noted that both plants had much in common, emphasized the importance of sharing positive practices for further improvement of operation safety and reliability of the nuclear power plants.  
 
Zaporizhia NPP Р the largest in Europe nuclear power plant operating six power units with VVER-1000 type reactors, each one having capacity of 1 MW (put into service in 1984-1995). 

Four power units of the same project, accepted into service in 1985-1993, operate at Balakovo NPP, which is the largest producer of electric power in Russia.

Unit 6 of Zaporizhia NPP and Unit 4 of Balakovo NPP became the first nuclear power plant units built in Ukraine and Russia after CIS formation.
