A new system of nondestructive test of metal passed acceptance trial at Kola NPP

At the department of nondestructive testing and technical state inspection of Kola NPP, there has passed acceptance trial of home made unit of automated nondestructive test of metal of composite welds.

A new development of the Scientific-Production Centre EKHO+ (Moscow) allows accelerating the process of working examination of welds for operational defects and increasing its certainty.

ТThe first stage of acceptance trials was held at the beginning of March in Moscow,У tells Vyacheslav Ignatov, a Deputy Head of the department. ТOur representatives participated in that process and tested the equipment for compliance with technical requirements. The SPC EKHO+ implemented recommendations of the acceptance committee before delivering the equipment to Kola NPP.

Following this, the system passed testing during the scheduled outage of the first power unit of the NPP. The tests were successful.
Kola NPP has become one of the first Russian nuclear power plants, where this test system has passed successful testing. After the procedure is allowed for operating by Rostechnadzor (Federal Environmental, Engineering & Nuclear Supervision Agency), it will be operated by experts of the nuclear power plant for testing welds of the compensator and reactor vessel.

The equipment is designed for ultrasonic inspection of composite welds of branch tubes of pressure equalizing lines, branch tubes of pressure compensating valves injection and branch tubes of emergency core cooling system of VVER-440 reactor vessel welded to the reducing bush with the application of  phased array flaw detecting technologies. This method is built on the advanced technical basis, which is used nowadays by the worldwide leaders in ultrasonic systems workout Р appliance of phased arrays. The main advantage of the system is providing complete information for testing at short waste of time, which significantly allows reducing duties of the staff.

Kola NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is located 200 km to the south of Murmansk on the bank of Lake Imandra. Produces about 60% of electricity of Murmansk region. Currently, the plant operates 4 power units with VVER-type reactors. Each reactor has capacity of 440 mW. Kola NPP supplies power for Murmansk region and Karelia.
