Rosenergoatom: Russian NPPs entered 2023 with a new record exceeding 223.3 billion kWh

In 2022, Rosenergoatom (part of the Electric Power Division of the State Corporation Rosatom) once again confirmed its status as the largest energy generating company in the country: its branches - nuclear power plants generated over 223.371 billion kWh (over 222.436 billion kWh were generated in 2021).

This volume of power generated by nuclear power plants allowed saving over 109 million tons of CO2-equivalent emissions (if a similar amount of power was generated by thermal generation). “We are finishing 2022 - an anniversary year for our company and for the nuclear industry as a whole - with excellent performance and another record. This year, as in previous years, Russian nuclear power plants operated reliably and safely. We not only fulfilled ahead of schedule, but also moved beyond the state task for generating power,” said Andrey Petrov, director general of Rosenergoatom. According to him, one of the main factors that played a big role in increasing power generation was the quality of the repair campaign, during which it was possible to optimize its period by 146 days, including through the use of fundamentally new digital tools.

The FAS balance in 2022 was fulfilled by 102.52% with the planned indicator of 217.872 billion kWh (or by 100.42% compared to the previous year, 2021). Installed capacity utilization factor (KIUM) amounted to 86.21%.

Balakovo (over 35.700 billion kWh), Rostovskaya (over 35.046 billion kWh) and Kalininskaya (over 32.636 billion kWh) nuclear power plants provided the maximum output among the Russian NPPs that made the largest contribution to the next record.

Today, Rosenergoatom as branches includes 11 operating NPPs, 37 power units are in operation (including the floating power unit (FPU) of the FNHPP as part of 2 reactor units) with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW.

Energy is the basis for the progressive social and economic development of the country, the supply of industry and citizens. Russia continues to modernize its energy complex, including nuclear power. This work is performed taking into account modern trends in digitalization and the replacement of imported equipment. The share of low-carbon power generation in the Russian energy sector is already about 40%. In the future, taking into account the growth in the share of nuclear generation, it will only grow.

At the moment, the share of nuclear generation is about 20% of the total electricity generation in the country. Therefore, every fifth light bulb in the Russian Federation burns from the power generated by nuclear power plants.
