Rosenergoatom: Novovoronezh NPP power unit No 6 of 3+ generation reached 100% of power capacity

On 26 January, 2017 power unit No 6 of 3+ generation of Novovoronezh NPP reached 100% of nominal capacity. After unscheduled repair of the power generator unit the test program has continued at the unit.

“At this moment we have completed thermal testing of turbine generator unit and complex trial of generator-transformer complex at various power levels”, the Manager of Novovoronezh NPP Vladimir Povarov said. “Next, we’ll carry out eighteen tests at 100% power level. Then power unit No 6 will be going through complex trial for 15 days, and after that it will be put into commercial operation.”

All the tests now running at power unit No 6 are in normal operation mode, no malfunctions have been found in the equipment operation.

Power unit No 6 has improved technical and economic parameters that ensure absolute safety of the operation and fully meet post-Fukushima requirements of the IAEA. Its main feature is the use of additional passive safety systems that do not require the NPP personnel intervention.

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located on the bank of the Don River in 42 km to the south of Voronezh. It is the Russia's first nuclear power plant with VVER reactors (water-to-water power reactors of case type with regular water under pressure). Each of five reactors of the station can be a main one – a prototype of serial power reactors: the power unit No. 1 with the VVER-210 reactor, the power unit No. 2 with the VVER-365 reactor, the No. 3, 4 power units with the VVER-440 reactors, the power unit No. 5 with the VVER-1000 reactor. The first power unit was launched in 1964, the second – in 1969, third – in 1971, fourth – 1972, fifth – 1980.

There are three power units (power units No.1, 2, 3 were stopped in 1984 and 1990 and 2016 respectively) in work at the moment.

Since 2007, the innovative 6th and 7th power blocks with the capacity of 1200 megawatts each have been constructed at the Novovoronezh NPP’s site.

The VVER-1200 RU project complies with all Russian and international security standards. Its main differentiator is the improved security system that makes the project’s security parameters second to none.
