Balakovo NPP increases production of electricity on 1.8% due to the implementation of an energy management system by 2016

The second surveillance audit of the company's 2013 energy management system (EMS) for compliance with the international standard ISO 50001: 2011 has successfully completed on October 22, 2015 at the Balakovo NPP.

The purpose of the EMS, which covers the entire infrastructure of the BalNPP, including administrative, industrial buildings and structures, external electric and heat networks on the territory of the nuclear power plant, is the realization of the systematic approach in achieving continual improvement of energy performance, including energy efficiency in the use and consumption of energy.

Implementation of the EMS and maintaining it up to date will enable the BalNPP to reduce electricity consumption by 2.3%, heat energy - by 9.3%, water supply - by 3.74% and to increase the generation of electricity by 1.8% by 2016.

During the 3 days of the audit the Committee has carefully reviewed the records of 12 major divisions and departments, checked its relevance and compliance with the standards, conducted interviews with staff.

During the audit there were no any discrepancies and were identified four best practices (strong sides). One of them is the union of the energy management system with the production system of the "Rosatom Concern", which made it possible to integrate the principles and approaches of energy-efficient management of production processes in the overall strategy of lean manufacturing.

Auditor of the EMS "Center of energy efficiency INTER RAO UES" Andriy Moroz said: "We have fulfilled total audit program - watched the necessary records and documents, talked with key experts in the energy management system. Having collected all the necessary evidence, it was concluded that the system is viable, it is working well. And the key factor is the professionals who provide it, as well as perfectly trained staff. I think the best side is connecting the energy management system with the production system of the "Rosatom Concern". I saw such a nuclear power plant for the first time and, in my opinion, it is a serious step forward".

The audit committee recommended the Russian representative office of the certification body DQS UL-Gruppe to extend the certificate issued in December 2013.
