At power unit No. 1 of the Kursk NPP-2, one of the most important pre-start-up technological operations is pouring the safety systems onto an open reactor

On October 19, 2023, at power unit No. 1 of the replacement station, the leakage of safety systems into the open PWR-TOI reactor began. This is one of the most important pre-start-up technological operations that provide the readiness of the operation of the equipment of the 1st circuit of the reactor plant.

“The pouring of chemically desalinated water into the open reactor confirms the readiness of the active and passive safety systems for further testing. These systems are important components of a nuclear installation and provide a high level of safety during electricity generation during the operation of Kursk NPP-2,” said the acting director. Director of the Kursk NPP Andrey Osharin. – We also check the functionality of the pumping units of technological systems. Based on the pouring results, we can verify that the installation was carried out correctly and the process equipment is ready for commissioning work.”

«The pouring is controlled by the operating personnel of the Kursk NPP-2 from the block control center. 60 tons of chemically demineralized water entered the reactor vessel through the pressure compensator through the main circulation pipeline of the primary circuit. At this stage, water samples were taken for subsequent laboratory testing to determine the hardness level, electrical conductivity and transparency. Specialists monitor the technological parameters and condition of the reactor primary circuit equipment.

“This is the first of numerous equipment inspections and the result of a long work of a large number of specialists - installers, adjusters and other workers involved in the construction of the Kursk NPP-2,” said Oleg Shperle, Vice President of ASE JSC and project director for the construction of the Kursk NPP. – The next stage of post-installation cleaning is hydraulic testing and circulation flushing of the primary circuit of the reactor installation of the first power unit. These operations will prepare the first power unit of the Kursk NPP-2 for physical start-up.”

Energy is the basis for the progressive social and economic development of the country, the supply of industry and citizens. The Russian fuel and energy complex continues the implementation of new projects and the planned renewal of capacities. This work is performed taking into account modern trends in digitalization and the replacement of imported equipment. Rosatom and its enterprises take an active part in this work.

Power units No. 1 and No. 2 of the KuNPP-2 of generation “3+” are pilot ones, being built according to the PWR-TOI project (standard optimized informatized pressurized water power reactor). This is a new project created by Russian designers (JSC Atomenergoproekt) on the basis of technical solutions for the NPP project with VVER-1200. They have improved technical and economic indicators. Compared to other 3+ generation power units, the VVER-TOI project assumes a significant reduction in the cost of construction, terms, and operating costs. The capacity of each power unit increased by 25%, up to 1255 MW compared to the power units of the operating Kursk NPP.
