Polar crane for unit 1 mounted on Akkuyu NPP site

August 19, 2022, Buyukeceli, Mersin Province, Turkey. – A polar crane was mounted in design position at Akkuyu NPP Power Unit No. 1.
The mounting operation was carried out using a Liebherr LR 13000 crane and took about four hours.

The mounting of the polar crane will allow performing further work for installation of the reactor compartment internal containment dome, mounting the process equipment, and preparation for water circulation with the open reactor.

Sergei Butсkikh, First Deputy Chief Executive Officer – Director of the NPP under Construction: «The mounting of the polar crane is one of the key events at Unit 1. It is very important that the installation of the crane was completed in due time; this will allow us to follow the schedule for further installation operations in the reactor building. The assembly of the crane structures is carried out in several stages and requires well-coordinated work. The best Turkish and Russian specialists are involved in the work. The crane is installed at an elevation of 38.5 meters. Currently, the metal structures of the polar crane bridge weighing 282 tons have been installed. The mounting of additional elements is still to be done. The total weight of the crane structures will be approximately 500 tons».

For reference:

The polar crane, also referred to as the circular bridge crane, is one of the most important mechanisms of the reactor compartment; it belongs to Safety Class 1 equipment for NPPs. It will be used at all stages of the nuclear power plant's life cycle.

At the operation stage, it will be used in transportation and process activities related to operation of the power unit and the reactor plant equipment: for example, the crane will be used during the loading and unloading of nuclear fuel.

Upon completion of startup and adjustment tests, the crane will turn through 360° along a circular rail track to perform transportation and process operations at any point in the central hall of the reactor building.

The manufacturer of the polar crane for Akkuyu NPP Unit No. 1 is TYAZHMASH Plant (Syzran, Russia). The disassembled crane was delivered to the Akkuyu NPP construction site in June 2022. Upon completion of the unloading of the ship, the crane components were carried to the construction site of the future NPP's first power unit.
