VNIIAES started training Turkish specialists for the Akkuyu NPP

VNIIAES (part of the control loop of Rosenergoatom, Electric Power Division of the State Corporation Rosatom) has begun training control operators for the Akkuyu NPP (Turkey), which is being built according to a Russian project. For this, full-scale and analytical simulators developed at VNIIAES are used.

Until mid-August, seven groups of engineers will take part in training at the so-called VNIIAES test site, who will later manage the power units of Turkey's first nuclear power plant. They include both Russian nuclear scientists with extensive experience in working at nuclear power plants, and Turkish specialists who previously studied at Russian universities with a degree in nuclear energy. 

Together with the staff of the Akkuyu NPP there are instructors from the Rosatom Technical Academy, which is responsible for training the personnel of nuclear power plants built abroad according to Russian projects.

The full-scale simulator (FSS) of the NPP power unit is designed for training, licensing and maintaining the qualifications of the operating personnel of the NPP unit control panel. The FSS includes exact copies of real block and backup control panels, integrated into a single software and hardware complex with a full-scale mathematical model of a real power unit.

Analytical simulator (AS) is a software and hardware modeling complex designed to train and maintain the qualifications of operational personnel. Here, the same real-time full-scale mathematical model of the power unit is used as in the FSS. The main difference between AS and FSS is that the consoles and panels of the block control console simulator are displayed in graphic form on touch screens. 

“The integrated full-scale model of the power unit for FSS/AS of the Akkuyu NPP meets all Russian and foreign requirements,” said Viktor Chernakov, deputy director of VNIIAES-NTP, director of the department of mathematical modeling and simulator engineering of VNIIAES. – It was created by VNIIAES without using any foreign codes for modeling, based on a completely Russian design system. Previously, the model was successfully applied in the creation of FSS for power units No. 4 of the Kalinin NPP and No. 3 of the Rostov NPP, as well as in the modernization of the FSS of the first stage of the Kalinin NPP, completed in December 2021. These works were performed by order of Rosenergoatom.

This autumn, both simulators will be dismantled and delivered to the Akkuyu NPP site in the province of Mersin, Turkey.
