More than 30 students from Turkey passed the work experience internship at Novovoronezh NPP

Thirty two 4th year students of the Obninsk Institute for Nuclear Power of the NRNU MEPhI completed their work internship at Novovoronezh NPP Training Center (TC).

Within three weeks, the specialists of the NPP TC shared their experience of working at the plant with the students, described the systems of the primary and secondary circuits and security systems.

“We learned a lot of useful and interesting information for these three weeks. Soon we will all be engineers and will start working at the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant. Without the knowledge that we got here, it's impossible to work at the Plant”, the student representative Atahan Kisedzhik said.

The Obninsk Institute for Nuclear Power of the NRNU MEPhI students are future employees of the Akkuyu NPP (Turkey). In addition to classes on the basis of the TC, they visited the observation platform of the innovative power units of the generation III+ of Novovoronezh NPP.

It is to be recalled that the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Plant is a nuclear power plant under construction on the southern coast of Turkey. The Akkuyu NPP is built according to Russian design on the basis of the Novovoronezh NPP-2 project, which includes the construction and commissioning of four power units with VVER-1200 type reactors. The intergovernmental agreement on the Plant’s construction was signed in May, 2010.

On 3 April, 2018, in the municipality of Gulnar (Mersin province, Turkey), a solemn ceremony of pouring the first concrete took place at the construction site of the Akkuyu NPP. It marked the beginning of the full-scale construction of the first Turkish nuclear plant, being built by Rosatom. The Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Republic of Turkey’s President Recep Erdogan took part in the ceremony via videoconference.

Novovoronezh NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom JSC (a part of the largest Division of Rosatom State Corporation – Electric Power Division). The Plant is situated on the River Don bank 42 km South of Voronezh. This is the first NPP of Russia with VVER type reactors (Water-Water Power Reactors of containment type with water under pressure). Three reactors of the Plant are the main ones – the prototypes of the serial power reactors. The first power unit was commissioned in 1964, the second one - in 1969, the third one – in 1971, the fourth one – in 1972, and the fifth one – in 1980.

The power units No 1 and No 2 were shut down in 1984 and 1990, respectively. The power unit No 3 was shut down in 2016 for the decommissioning events. The power unit No 4 was shut down for modernization works. The power unit No 1 of Novovoronezh NPP-2 was commissioned on 27 February, 2017. The power unit No 2 is in the stage of commissioning works.
