“The speed of construction and power blocks start-up at the Rostov NPP is the unique case in the global nuclear power plants construction experience”, Sergey Kirienko, the head of Rosatom

On September 16, 2016, during the visit to the Rostov nuclear power plant, Sergey Kirienko, the CEO of the Rosatom State Corporation, said that this NPP is the world’s only one that launches three power block in just 7 years.

The head of the atomic industry has stressed that the speed of power blocks’ construction is the unique case in the history of nuclear power facilities: “The Rostov NPP became the world’s first one to restore continuous construction of power blocks. The second one was launched in 2010, with the 3rd one to follow in 2015 and the 4th one scheduled for 2017. This is the result we can be proud of”.

Mr. Kirienko had a meeting with the Rostov NPP team, thanked the nuclear power experts for their high performance and great work, and noted that the Rostov NPP exceeds the electricity output plan for around 500 million kilowatt-hours. “We are confident that our colleagues in Volgodonsk will beat the 2016 plan instead of just meeting their target”, Sergey Kirienko added.

During his visit to Volgodonsk, Mr. Kirienko visited both the Rostov NPP construction site and the Atommash plant. He pointed out that ever since the manufacturer became a part of Rosatom, it has managed to increase their production scope and revenue many times. “When Atommash just became the part of the atomic power industry, its annual revenue was 1.6 billion rubles, which has now grown up to 7 billion rubles. The plant also has a portfolio of long-term contracts with the total value of 57 billion rubles. As of now, we are planning ton concentrate most of the Rosatom’s engineering capacities in Volgodonsk”, Mr. Kirienko said.

He also elaborated that the company is going to work on the equipment not related to the nuclear power industry. “At the moment, Rosatom is responsible for building new wind parks in Russia, and we expect Atommash to be involved in wind-generation installations production. In general, the teams at both the Rostov NPP and Atommash have performed well this year, but I’m especially happy about their perspectives for the future”, the Rosatom CEO noted.

In the run-up to the Nuclear Industry Employee Day, the head of Rosatom held an acknowledgment ceremony to award the nuclear power experts from Volgodonsk. Andrey Salnikov, the Rostov NPP director, was awarded the 1st Class “For Merit to the Fatherland” Order, while Alexey Fedotov, the deputy director of capital construction, received the 2nd Class “For Merit to the Fatherland” Order.

The Rostov NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based at the Tsymlianskoe reservoir shore 13.5 km away from Volgodonsk. The NPP operates VVER-1000 reactors with the installed capacity of 1000 megawatts. The power block No.1 commenced commercial operations in 2001, with the second and the third power blocks to follow in 2010 and on September 17, 2015, respectively. The power block No. 4 is currently under construction.
