The Smolensk NPP won an international environmental competition

The Smolensk NPP has won the international competition "Ecological Culture. Peace and harmony" organized by the Non-governmental Ecological Fund named after V.I. Vernadsky.

The Smolensk NPP project - a memorable sign "Good Guardian Angel of Peace - Symbol of trust to nuclear power" became the winner in the category "Environmental culture of social initiatives". Diploma and a statuette was presented to the head of the Department of environmental protection of the Smolensk NPP Svetlana Aksenova by the Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Natural Resources, Environment and Ecology Vladimir Kashin.

As it was explained by the head of the Environmental Protection Department of the Smolensk NPP Svetlana Aksenov, installing of the symbolic memorial sign "Good Angel" in the heart of the city by atomic scientists was a logical continuation of environmental achievements and victories of the Smolensk nuclear scientists. The Smolensk NPP was recognized as a supervisor of environmental guidelines of the Smolensk regionfor the special contribution to environmental protection, the international environmental movement "Living Planet" called nuclear power plant the leader in socially and environmentally responsible business.

Environmentally and socially significant project of the Smolensk NPP "Good Guardian Angel of Peace - Symbol of trust to nuclear power" was praised by the jury. According to experts, the project has an effective result: symbolizes and enhances the credibility to the peaceful atom from the public and promotes environmental culture and responsibility for the environmentto young generations.

181 projectsparticipatedin the international competition, held in seven nominations. Professional expertise in environmental initiatives was carried out by specially formed international jury under the chairmanship of the State Duma Committee for Science and High Technology, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Valery Chereshneva.

The award ceremony took place on June 5 at the State Kremlin Palace in the framework of the opening of the first All-Russian Children's Environmental Festival, which harmoniously combined three big holiday: Children's Day, World Environmental Day and the Day of the ecologist. This large-scale forum gathered together about 5,000 participants - ecologists, representatives of public authorities, major industrial companies and corporations, NGOs, teachers and pupils of educational institutions.

The memorial sign "Good Angel - guardian of peace"releasing the dove into the slyis a symbol of public trustto the peaceful atom and was inaugurated in Atomgrad on September 12, 2014. These sculptures are installed in 26 cities, 19 of them are in Russia. Passing the baton of honorof the"Good angel"to Desnogorsk became a landmark event.

International Competition "Ecological Culture. Peace and harmony"was established in 2012 to identify and promote projects, developments and ideas that have a practical application in the field of formation and development of ecological culture among theRussian Federation population. It is aimed at preserving of favorable environment, environmental safety and maximize efficient use of natural resources for the health and well-being of present and future generations.

The Smolensk nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The SNPP annually issues on the average about 20 billion kilowatts hours of the electric power into country power supply system, that constitutes about 13% of the energy, developed in «Rosenergoatom Concern», and more than 80% of the Smolensk region energy, developed by the power entities.
