The Smolensk NPP has invested over 200 million rubles for the major environment protection activities in 2015

According to Svetlana Aksenova, the head of the Smolensk NPP’s environment protection department, in 2015, the NPP has invested 16 million rubles more compared to 2014 into the environment protection activities. The total sum invested accounted for 203 million rubles. The information was delivered during the public presentation of the Smolensk NPP’s ecological report on September 30, 2016, at the Smolensk regional information nuclear power center.

“The Smolensk NPP has re-confirmed that it cares about the environment and the people living all over the country, not just in Desnogorsk and the Smolensk Region. This is what we are to thank them for”, Vladimir Ivanov, the acting head of the Federal Supervisory Natural Resources Management Service, stated.

Several government agents, representatives of the supervisory bodies, scientists, education professionals, and local journalists took part in the presentation.

“The region is very interested in the nuclear power plant’s operations and its environment protection measures”, Natalia Kibisova, the head of the Smolensk regional information nuclear power center, said. “We have now formed a great tradition of inviting the Smolensk NPP’s representative to present their data to the people of our city directly”.

“The Smolensk NPP plans and implements cost-intensive projects annually and only pursues ecological effects, not economic ones. Our environment protection measures are carried out pursuant to the Russian legal acts and the environmental standards”, Svetlana Aksenova stressed.

The public expressed certain concerns on the radiation control over the NPP’s location. Igor Krasnov, the Smolensk NPP’s deputy chief engineer, said that the radiation safety zone boasts a strict multi-channel and multi-staged control and monitoring system using an automated nuclear environment verification system. Long-lasting researches carried out by independent laboratories have demonstrated that the Smolensk NPP facilitates environment safety and operates in such a way that it doesn’t affect the NPP’s staff and the population living nearby.

At the end of the meeting, the guests had a chance to review the report in a form of a booklet.
