The Rostov NPP: the team started installing the last emergency core cooling system’s accumulator at the 4th power block under construction

The installation team at the Rostov NPP’s 4th power block under construction has started installing the last emergency core cooling system’s accumulator.

This safety system comprises four accumulators and can work autonomously without any staff involved and without any external power supply. One accumulator with a volume of 93 cubic meters weighs 86 tons. Meanwhile, in the reactor hall, the nuclear refueling machine is being adjusted and the motor-operated valves and mechanisms are being rotated.

Preparatory activities for system’s spill over an open reactor are in progress. During the technological operation, the reactor assembly’s pipes and equipment will be cleaned up. The “spill” is planned for late 2016.

Besides, the 4th power block is undergoing works on containment system’s wire pre-tensioning. The turbine is being installed at the machine hall.

The power block No. 4 is planned to be launched in 2017.

The Rostov NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based at the Tsymlianskoe reservoir shore 13.5 km away from Volgodonsk. The NPP operates VVER-1000 reactors with the installed capacity of 1000 megawatts. The power block No.1 commenced commercial operations in 2001, with the second and the third power blocks to follow in 2010 and on September 17, 2015, respectively. The power block No. 4 is currently under construction.
