The Rostov NPP: almost 50 cables of the reactor building’s containment pre-tensioning system have been mounted at the 4th power block under construction

48 cables of the reactor building’s containment pre-tensioning system have been mounted at the Rostov NPP’s 4th power block under construction. That said, around 40% of the whole scope of work at this facility has been completed.

Aleksey Fedotov, the deputy director of capital construction at the Rostov NPP, elaborated on the essence and the timelines for the operation: “The containment pre-tensioning system contains 132 specially designed metal cables that give an additional margin of safety to the containment, which is one of the elements of the accident localization system. The system installation process follows the guidelines and is subdivided into several steps”.

According to Mr. Fedotov, the cable tension activities are to be completed by mid-September.

The installation of the containment pre-tensioning system is one of the main operations preceding the containment’s trials for integrity and density. Its goal is to prevent radioactive material from penetration into the environment in case of an accident.

The reactor building’s containment is made of pre-stressed concrete with inside metal facing so that it can endure such extreme factors as a maximum credible earthquake of magnitude 7, whirlwinds, storms, and air blasts.

The reactor compartment is the place where the pre-commissioning procedures for the refueling machine and the preparatory activities for the last emergency core cooling system’s accumulator installation are taking place.

Meanwhile, turbine installation is the top priority at the machine hall.

The power block No. 4 is planned to be launched in 2017.

The Rostov NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based at the Tsymlianskoe reservoir shore 13.5 km away from Volgodonsk. The NPP operates VVER-1000 reactors with the installed capacity of 1000 megawatts. The power block No.1 commenced commercial operations in 2001, with the second and the third power blocks to follow in 2010 and on September 17, 2015, respectively. The power block No. 4 is currently under construction.
