The Novovoronezh NPP: Russia may become a partner for South Africa in its nuclear power development program

A delegation from South Africa has paid a visit to the Novovoronezh NPP (an affiliate company of the Rosenergoatom Concern) to get acquainted with the modern 3+ generation power block.

The delegation comprised the winners of the international competition on using nuclear power peacefully, which was organized in 2016 jointly by PMC and the Northwestern University (Johannesburg, South Africa). The University’s professors and lecturers along with the representatives of the leading South African media accompanied the champions.

The national student’s competition “Satisfying the power needs and developing nuclear power industry in South Africa” was completed in July 2016 and was designed to make engineering and technical jobs more popular, as well as to improve the knowledge of the modern nuclear technologies.

The guests visited the 6th power block’s control box, the machine hall, the auxiliary rooms, and a full-scale simulator.
I was highly impressed by what I saw here, and I do believe that Russia can become our partner in nuclear capacity development project”, Witchers Jakob Harm, the director of the Northwestern University’s Nuclear school, said when sharing his impressions.

At the moment, South Africa is the only country on the continent operating a nuclear power plant. In 1980’s, 2 power blocks of the Koeberg NPP based on a French project were commissioned, their total capacity accounting for 1880 megawatts. Besides, there is a research nuclear reactor outside of Johannesburg.

The Novovoronezh nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located on the bank of the Don River in 42 km to the south of Voronezh. It is the Russia's first nuclear power plant with VVER reactors (water-to-water power reactors of case type with regular water under pressure). Each of five reactors of the station can be a main one – a prototype of serial power reactors: the power unit No. 1 with the VVER-210 reactor, the power unit No. 2 with the VVER-365 reactor, the No. 3, 4 power units with the VVER-440 reactors, the power unit No. 5 with the VVER-1000 reactor. The first power unit was launched in 1964, the second – in 1969, third – in 1971, fourth – 1972, fifth – 1979. There are three power units (power units No.1, 2 were stopped in 1984 and 1990 respectively) in work at the moment.

Since June 2007 Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC has been involved into the construction of the two new-generation Novovoronezh NPP power generation plants based on the NPP-2006 project as the owner and the developer. The construction is carried out in accord-ance with the operational program of the national nuclear corporation ROSATOM enacted by the Government of the Russian Federation in the Resolution No. 705 dated September 20, 2008, and is funded at the expense of Rosenergoatom and the asset contribution. VVER-1200 reactor units will operate at the new LM NPP blocks.

The VVER-1200 RU project complies with all Russian and international security standards. Its main differentiator is the improved security system that makes the project’s security parameters second to none.
