The Leningrad NPP: the transport hatch has been successfully elevated to the reactor building of the first power block under construction

The operation of elevating the transport hatch has been completed at the Leningrad NPP 1st power block’s construction site. The heavy equipment was lifted to the +26 point using a transport trestle crane. This is the last piece of large-sized equipment that basically finalizes the reactor building.

“This is a very important step for us, and we prepared a lot for it, including the scoping and the route for heavy equipment delivery”, said Igor Zhelezniak, the deputy chief engineer of the Leningrad NPP for technical maintenance and repair. “The transport trestle is an element of the containment and is installed at the end of the line because all main equipment for the reactor hall is being transferred via the process-oriented opening where the trestle is placed. Now, when one of the most critical steps of its transportation and elevation is over, our specialists can start working on closing the containment”.

Once the transport trestle is installed onto the launching rail, it will be moved to the intra-containment space as designed. The works are planned to be finalized in September.

When the power block is up and running, any transport operations related to nuclear fuel and equipment delivery during the repair campaigns will be carried out through the transport trestle.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
