The Leningrad NPP: the reactor building’s containment strands have been tensioning has been completed at the 1st power block under construction

On December 1st, 2016, the preliminary tensioning of the reactor building’s containment strands has been completed at the Leningrad NPP’s 1st power block under construction. It took the team around two months to finalize it.

Having the system ready is one of the critical preconditions for the next operation – endurance and leakage tests of the reactor’s containment.

Vladimir Pereguda, the Leningrad NPP director, thanked the Leningrad NPP team involved in this mission-critical process and said he hoped that all subsequent activities will be just as efficient and consistent. “Until the end of the year, we are to finalize a couple of other key operations in the reactor and turbine building, which means we need to keep ourselves concentrated and to adhere to our strict time lines”.

The team started working on the pre-tensioning system around two years ago. During this time, vertical and horizontal ductubes were assembled within the concrete containment. Afterwards, high-endurance steel strands were installed and injected with special concrete solution.

Each strand is a supertough cable made of 55 high-endurance slivers with low relaxation. The diameter of each sliver is 15.7 mm. All in all, there are around 7000 steel cables tensioned as a net with a force of 1200 tons.

When passing through the concrete body, each cable acts as a contracting element for the reactor’s containment both vertically and horizontally. The usage of the pre-tensioning technology helps to boost endurance and reliability for a reactor building.

Vitaliy Shutikov, the head of the Leningrad NPP’s reactor workshop, said: “Thanks to the pre-tensioning system, the inner containment of the operating NPP will act more effectively as a localization safety system catering for the reactor building’s internal volume hermetic state under any operational modes of the reactor unit, including the emergency ones”.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
