The Leningrad NPP: the 1st power block’s heating systems are 90% completed

The Leningrad NPP’s first power block under construction is being prepared for the fall and winter season of 2016-2017. The planned activities on turning the heating systems on run in accordance with the schedule. At the moment, those systems are 90% ready for heat supply. By early November, the thirty buildings of the first power block under construction will be properly heated.

“Heat supply is a very time-consuming, elaborate, and multi-layered process. At the very first stage, our specialists have filled in the heating systems with the heating agent. Afterwards, we carried out a trial heat supply and the hydraulic verifications. In the near future, we are to attain the standard heating agent’s parameters, adjust the heat acceptance and transfer system and facilitate reliable heating within the first power block’s facilities”, said Nikolay Rusakov, the deputy head of the Leningrad NPP’s support systems workshop. He also added that catering for the installation and adjustment staff’s comfort is the top priority for his team and that the workers can work to their full strength during the coldest seasons.

During the construction phase, the Leningrad NPP’s construction site will be heated based on the temporary schedule within the network of the Scientific and Technological Research Instituted named after A.P. Alexandrov. Once the first power block is launched operational, heat will be supplied from the heating unit by using the steam extracted from the turbine. When the individual heating units of the facilities are launched operational, the team can track the heating agent’s rate and temperature and administer comfortable conditions within the buildings.

The Leningrad NPP is an affiliate company for Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The plant is based in the city of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km to the west from Saint Petersburg at the Gulf of Finland shore. The Leningrad NPP is the first Russian nuclear power plant having RBMK-1000 reactors (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors). The NPP exploits 4 power blocks with the electric capacity of 1000 megawatt each. Also, pursuant to the NPP-2006 project, 1,2 VVER-1200 power blocks included into The State Atomic Energy Corporation ROSATOM long-term plan are being constructed. Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC is the owner and developer of the project. Holding TITAN-2 is the primary contractor. ATOMPROEKT is the general designer.
