The Kola NPP: the largest emergency response exercises, based on scenario similar to an accident at the nuclear power plant "Fukushima" take place in the Arctic

The complex of emergency exercises (CEE 2014), which are being held on 27-28 August at the Kola NPP, held and are based on the scenario similar to the situation at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in March 2011. The director of the Kola nuclear power plant, the head of emergency operations CEE Vasily Omelchuk reported about it. "We try to take into account the lessons of the past and the experience of foreign colleagues," - he stressed.

The CEE with a group of emergency assistance to nuclear plants (EANP) are held annually on one of the Russian nuclear power plants (branches of the JSC Concern "Rosenergoatom"). They are aimed primarily at practicing of interaction between participants of emergency response at all levels, including inter-agency and federal. This year, the event involved over a thousand people and more than a hundred units of military and specialized equipment. More than 20 foreign experts will be watching after the CEE course in 2014.

According to the director of production and operation departments of nuclear power plants of the JSC "Rosenergoatom" Concern Alexander Shutikov, similar exercises were held at most places of the world, which have nuclear power plants  on its territory, but the Russian's differ from them on the scale of interaction and number of affected structures.

The exercise scenario is designed with a goal to test thoroughly the various units, including rescue and repair crews, firefighters, medical personnel, as well as efficiency of public awareness in civil defense and emergencies. According to the words of V. Omelchuka, participants of the CEE 2014, will also have to work out the interaction with municipal and regional agencies and authorities.

On the first day of the exercises special forces of the nuclear power plant were deployed, actions on conditional restoration of power supply were done, leak containment and fire fighting (suspended) were performed at the site of the Kola NPP. Technological part of the scenario operations staff performs on a full-scale simulator, which was recently commissioned after an extensive renovation and can simulate any crisis situation, up to beyond design basis accident. Radiation is often modeled on the simulated automatic radiation control system (ARCS).

The recovery column is being shaped at the moment, this column was entered by the plant staff and contractors, unused in eliminating of hypothetical accident, and popped to Zori. Assessment on the actions of the CEE will be given by the mediators - the representatives of the central apparatus of the Concern "Rosenergoatom", operating nuclear power plants, emergency services in the Murmansk region.

The Kolskaya nuclear power plant is a branch of JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located in 200 km to the South from Murmansk on the shore of the Lake Imandra. It develops about 60% of the electric power of Murmansk region. There are 4 power units in operation with reactors of type VVER 440 MW each. The Kolskaya nuclear power plant is the supplier of the electric power for Murmansk region and Karelia.
