The Kalinin NPP: “The launch of the Europe’s largest Data Processing Center in Udomlia will mark the start of the new high-tech component in the economy of the Region” – S. Kirienko

During the working visit to the Kalinin NPP and to the city of Udomlia on September 14, 2016, the CEO of the Rosatom State Corporation, Sergey Kirienko, said that the launch of the Europe’s largest Data Processing Center in Udomlia, which is being constructed next to the Kalinin NPP (Rosenergoatom affiliate) at the moment, would mark the start of the new high-tech component in the regional economy.

The visit to the center’s construction site was one of the things on his agenda. Mr. Kirienko was accompanied by Igor Rudenya, the acting governor of the Tver Region, Vladimir Vasiliev, the deputy Chairman of the State Duma, Andrey Petrov, the CEO of the Rosenergoatom Concern, and Victor Ignatov, the Kalinin NPP director.

«The first order covers 4.8 thousand IT stands, while the second one will allow placing up to 8 thousand standard stands in general. This site helps to double the scope. Myself and Mr. Rudenya are working on additional contracts, including those from the state ministries and agencies. For the Tver Region, it will embrace new employment and the new high-tech economy”, said the Rosatom CEO.

Evgeny Goncharov, the CHD Engineering CEO, reported on the progress of work in the following way: “As of now, all 0 Phase works at three buildings have been completed. We have also constructed the security station building, while the administrative and service building is 50% complete. The first construction stage where we are to finalize three buildings and to connect them to the electric substation is planned to be over in summer 2017. By March 2018, we are to erect the rest of the module Center’s buildings”.

He also noted that the works are carried out 24/7. 280 workers and 20 engineers and technicians are involved in the data processing center construction, with the total number of employees to be increased by 400 people by November. When addressing Mr. Kirienko’s question on the risks related to the facility completion deadline, Mr. Gonchatov reassured that this problem is highly unlikely.

Meanwhile, Mr. Rudenya stated that data processing and storage centers are actively introduced all over the world. The Tver Region has this experience, too, thanks to its cooperation with Yandex. “We want to extend this service. Next year, when this center is launched, we will move the Tver Region database in it, which will bring the regional government into the brand new operational level, help to automate document management processing and financial flows. We are very excited about this perspective”, he added.

Later in the day, Sergey Kirienko and Igor Rudenya agreed on signing a new contract between the regional government and the Rosatom State Corporation. It is important to note that the present agreement was signed in 2012 and catered for additional possibilities for Udomlia district development. The document relies on additional tax liabilities imposed on the nuclear power vendors in favor of the regions they are located in as a part of the Rosatom consolidated group of taxpayers.
“In fact, in 2015 the agreement became invalid. However, we are still working on calling additional tax incomes. The regional government guarantees that part of those funds will be invested in Udomlia city district development”, said Mr. Kirienko.

The high-profile guests also took part in the ceremony of the nuclear class being opened at the Udomlia gymnasium No.3. At the end of his visit to the city, Mr. Kirienko had a meeting with the NPP employees and the dwellers of the Udomlia city district.

* The supporting Data Processing Center is being constructed in the city of Udomlia, Tver Region, next to the Kalinin NPP that will provide electric power supply to the facility. This data processing center can become the largest one in the country, while its working power will prospectively reach 80 megawatts. The fact that the Center is based next to an NPP will enable it to have an independent, reliable, and potent electric power supply source and to guarantee a high level of the site’s and the processed data’s physical protection. The Center’s first stage (the halls for 800 commercial typical stands of the Rosenergoatom Concern) is to be commissioned in June 2017, with the second one to follow in June 2018. Rostetelecom assists in this project as a partner.

The Kalininskaya nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located in the north of the Tver region in the Udomelskiy area. There are four power units with water-cooled power reactors (VVER-1000) with installed capacity of 1000 MW each in the structure of the Kalininskaya nuclear power station.
