The Kalinin NPP: the one-of-a-kind technological project on eliminating copper-bearing equipment at the 3rd power block has been completed

The unique technological procedures of replacing a turbine condenser as a part of a large-scale modernization have been successfully completed at the Kalinin NPP’s 3rd power block. Previously, it was stopped on May 14 for scheduled medium-complexity maintenance. As of now, the power block operates at its full capacity.

This replacement at a power block of such equipment configuration was the first one throughout the whole history of nuclear power plants’ operation. The works were organized as a part of the industrial product on copper-bearing equipment elimination at the NPP’s secondary circuit in order to make the steam generators run more effectively.

It is important to note that any nuclear power station blocks designed according to the Soviet projects, including the Kalinin NPP’s 3rd power block, had a turbine condenser with a pipe still made of copper-bearing solution vulnerable to rust. Besides, copper does not allow to change the secondary circuit coolant’s water chemistry conditions dramatically, which, in turn, affects the steam generators’ capacity.

During the maintenance at the 3rd power block, the team has also replaced the generator stator and updated the turbine’s low-pressure cylinder No.2. The fact that the power block’s machine hall wall panels were dismantled is what makes those works unique. Each panel weighs around 10.5 tons. This operation was essential for heavy equipment delivery to the machine hall.

All in all, around 3000 tons of metal works were dismantled and re-assembled during the maintenance period, with over 250 people from the maintenance, engineering and technical departments of the NPP and the contracting companies being involved in the project.

*A condenser is a piece of equipment designed to cool vapor return at a turbine house. It is a part of the turbine’s circulatory water supply system.

At the moment, the Kalinin NPP operates the 1st, the 3rd, and the 4th power blocks, while the 2nd one is undergoing maintenance. The radiation background within the NPP’s location and the nearby territories is at the level of normal operation and does not exceed the natural background.

The Kalininskaya nuclear power plant is a branch of the JSC "Concern Rosenergoatom". The station is located in the north of the Tver region in the Udomelskiy area. There are four power units with water-cooled power reactors (VVER-1000) with installed capacity of 1000 MW each in the structure of the Kalininskaya nuclear power station.
