Smolensk Nuclear Engineers Participate in Municipal Environmental Volunteer Clean-Up

On May 5 in Desnogorsk, the city of Smolensk nuclear experts, there has been held a traditional volunteer clean-up attended by 600 employees of Smolensk NPP and veterans of the plant. In total the municipal clean-up was attended by more than a thousand people.

The volunteer clean-up has become the final stage of the Month for cleaning the city, during which the forces of Smolensk NPP, contractors and urban services carried out a large scope of works on the city cleaning: there have been cleaned the territories near the houses, repaired and painted the small forms at the kids’ playgrounds.

Today it has been necessary to arrange the main road, Central Square, and forest-park territories. The youth organizations of the city got one of the most complex and labour-intensive areas - the territory of embankment, “Pyatak” (the so-called summer dance floor) and yacht club. Very soon there will be started a construction of the youth centre here, which is required for the city. At the same time, there has been cleaned up the place near the memorable sign dedicated to the village Serebryanka burned by the Germans.

The whole planned scope of works was carried out to a good quality and in time.
At the end of the volunteer clean-up, the managers of Smolensk NPP and City Administration took part in planting trees in the park near the Desnogorsk temple “Joy of All Who Sorrow”. Fluffy thujas, brought from the orchard of the Bryansk region, have become a real decoration of the city.

The Director of Smolensk NPP Andrey Petrov, who had taken the direct part in the volunteer clean-up, told: “Today in the city there has been equipped a beautiful park, in the centre of which soon there will appear a memorial complex dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the Patriotic War of 1812. I’m thankful to all Desnogorsk citizens, who have participated in this volunteer clean-up, because together we make a common cause – we develop our beautiful city for ourselves and our future generations.”

Desnogorsk has a good tradition of carrying out mass-wide municipal environmental volunteer clean-up, foundation of which after a long break was laid in 2007 by the staff of Smolensk NPP.
