Smolensk NPP: Meeting on Safety of Hydraulic Engineering Structures of Russian NPPs

On August 22-23 at Smolensk NPP there was held an annual meeting on issues of safe operation of hydraulic engineering structures (HES) of nuclear power plants of Russia. It was attended by representatives of the Technology Department of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC, heads and specialists of hydraulic services of operating NPPs and those under construction, as well as contracting organizations.



Opening the meeting, Deputy Chief Engineer of Smolensk NPP, Vladimir Zakharenkov, emphasized the importance of similar meetings to exchange experiences, which helped to improve the operation safety of hydraulic engineering structures and nuclear power plants of Russia in general.

“The country safety, both industrial and economic, as well as safety of its population, depends on the quality of operation of its hydraulic structures,” noted Vladimir Zakharenkov.

 

Participants of the meeting discussed the state of hydraulic engineering structures of NPPs, temperature conditions of cooling ponds, shared the experiences on increasing of their cooling capacity, implementation of measures to improve HES safety and interaction with oversight bodies.

During the meeting the participants visited a complex of HES of Smolensk NPP, which was one of the largest among NPPs of Russia, as well as trout farm.



Smolensk NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. Annually SNPP provides the country power system at an average of about 20 billion kWh of electrical power, which makes about 13% of energy produced by Rosenergoatom Concern and more than 80% produced by the power enterprises of the Smolensk Region.
