Smolensk NPP: Meeting of Deputy Chief Engineers of NPPs of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC

On June 19-22, 2012 at Smolensk NPP there was held a meeting of Deputy Chief Engineers of NPPs on modernization.

The meeting was attended by the representatives of the Central Office of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC, Russian nuclear power plants and design organizations.

Opening the meeting, Deputy Director for Production and Operation of NPPs of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC, Andrey Dementyev, emphasised, that it was no coincidence that Smolensk NPP was chosen as a platform for the offsite meeting. According to him, for the past years the plant has taken a big step towards improving all the aspects of the activities including modernization.

 “Last year in short terms there was performed a large scope of works on modernization with the purpose of lifetime extension of the first power unit,” he noted. “There has been reached a high level of operation, to which the plant has come thanks largely to OSART mission conducted in 2011. It would be nice to demonstrate these achievements to colleagues.”

On the meeting there have been considered the issues concerning the improvement of the engineering operation support system, realization of post-Fukushima activities, and carrying out the plans on modernization in the second semester of 2012.

Among the priorities identified are: modernization of Kalinin 1 and Balakovo 1, which will be shut down for the longterm outage for replacement of turbine condensers with the materials made of stainless steel. Also it is scheduled to complete the work on obtaining the license on extension of the operating life of the first power unit of Smolensk NPP.

As part of the meeting, the specialists visited the main production, the upgraded main control unit of the first power unit, central room and turbine island, as well as the training-laboratory facilities for the maintenance personnel.

Smolensk NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. Annually SNPP provides the country power system at an average of about 20 billion kWh of electrical power, which makes about 13% of energy produced by Rosenergoatom Concern and more than 80% produced by the power enterprises of the Smolensk Region.
