Smolensk NPP: Desnogorsk Opens Work and Holiday Camp for School Children

In the satellite city of Smolensk nuclear power plant – Desnogorsk – on basis of School 1, there was opened a work and holiday summer camp for high school students of the city.

In the solemn opening ceremony, which took place on July 5, 2012, the taken part were representatives of Smolensk NPP Public Information Centre.

Thanks to support of the nuclear power plant, which provides full scope of works and pays for the young workers’ labour, the organization of the camp becomes possible not for the first time. This year 125 school students aged 14-17 years old work and rest here.

The main strength of students is focused on cleaning the dam of the cooling pond of Smolensk NPP, cleaning curbs, verges, trimming bushes and grassplots alongside the highway leading to the Office and Amenity Building. They also work in greenhouses, where vegetables are grown, which become a part of the nuclear engineers’ ration.

Director fo the camp, Viktoria Senkina, is sure that children spend time having fun, improve their health, and most importantly – feel themselves involved in the life of the nuclear power plant. “This is almost a preliminary field-specific training,” says Viktoria Viktorovna. “The guys can make choice about what they like, what profession they’d like to engage their occupational biography with, where to study. Interaction with Smolensk NPP is also of big importance. Desnogorsk is a satellite city and our local economic mainstay is the nuclear power plant. We wish qualified employees to work there. We hope that soon our children, which today successfully work at the camp, will join the number of nuclear engineers.”
