Smolensk NPP: Cup of Russia in Fishing

From June 1 to 3, 2012 on the cooling pond of Smolensk NPP, there was held a Cup of Russia in float fishing, timed to the 20th anniversary of Rosenergoatom Concern and 30th anniversary since the startup of Smolensk 1.



Its organizers were the Russian Association of Public Unions Rosokhotrybolovsoyuz, Rosatom State Corporation, Rosenergoatom Concern and Smolensk NPP.

The competition involved 14 teams from 9 regions of Russia: Moscow and Saint-Petersburg, the Voronezh, Pskov, Rostov, Samara, Saratov and Smolensk regions, Krasnodarskiy territory. In total more than 70 athletes arrived to the event, among which many were masters of sports of the international class, World and European champions.

As Deputy Chief Justice, Oleg Mosorov, highlighted, the Cup of Russia was attended by the elite of sports fishing: “According to the results of the competition, they will form the national team of Russia, which will have to defend the honor of the country at the European and World championships.”

The competitions were held both in individual and team championships. Along with anglers, in individual championship, there competed also Desnogorsk amateur fishermen. They had a unique opportunity to get a master class in sport fishing from aces of the sport.
The total catch for 2 days made more than 200 kg. After the finish and control weighing of the catch, by request of the participants of the competition, the fish caught from the cooling pond of Smolensk NPP was tested by the radiation detection laboratory. Its power of gamma radiation made 0,08 mcSv/h, that corresponded to the natural value. Everyone could become personally certain in its absolute safety and suitability for use.

Almost all the fish caught during the competition was released back into the pond. A part of it went to fish soup, cooked according to old Smolensk recipes, and which could be tried by Desnogorsk citizens right on the town square during the ceremony of closing of the competition.

As a result of events, the first place in the team championship was won by the team “Moscow-1”, the second – “Moscow-3”, and the third – “Moscow-2”.

In the individual championship, the “gold” of the competition went to Ilya Yakushin (“Moscow-1”), “silver” was got by Yuriy Siptsov (“Moscow-1”), and “bronze” went to the athlete from Rostov, Vladimir Pavlischev.

Among the amateurs the first place was won by Galina Popoludova, 2nd – Sergey Uchin, 3rd – Aleksey Bychkov.
The winners received cups and valuable prizes, established by the State Corporation Rosatom, Rosenergoatom Concern and Smolensk NPP.

Andrey Ivanov, a Project Director of the Communications Department of Rosatom, noted that it already was the third Cup of Russia on the cooling pond of Smolensk NPP, the organizer of which was Rosatom State Corporation.

 “It’s very important for us to show to people that the nuclear power plant is safe and environmentally clean in every respect, and in this the participants of the Cup of Russia in fishing could assure theirselves again.”

The work of fishermen-sportsmen was observed by representatives of 18 Federal and regional mass media. They organized an environmental raid on the environmental reservoir of Smolensk NPP with visiting the laboratory of biotechnology of the nuclear power plant.



Smolensk NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. Annually SNPP provides the country power system at an average of about 20 billion kWh of electrical power, which makes about 13% of energy produced by Rosenergoatom Concern and more than 80% produced by the power enterprises of the Smolensk Region.
