Rosenergoatom: Moscow Opens VIII International Sci-Tech Conference ТSafety, Efficiency and Economics of Nuclear Power Generation IndustryУ

On May 23, 2012 Moscow opened the regular VIII International Sci-Tech Conference ТSafety, Efficiency and Economics of the Nuclear Power Generation IndustryУ (MNTK-2012), organized by Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC.

The conference will contribute to solution of the most pressing challenges related to ensuring and increasing safety in operation of nuclear power plants, increasing of the installed capacity utilization factor (ICUF), extending the lifetime and decommissioning of power units, as well as improving economic efficiency and looking for the ways to develop the nuclear power generation industry.

The participants, which were more than 700 Russian and foreign specialists, representing dozens of companies, organizations and enterprises of the nuclear power generation industry, will discuss the achievements of the modern nuclear power generation industry on such issues as: NPPsХ operation with VVER, RBMK, BN model reactors, emergency preparedness and protection against radiation, upgrading and extension of nuclear power plants, radiation safety and environment, radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel handling (RAW and SNF), development and economics of the nuclear power generation industry of Russia, and many others.

MNTK-2012 is attended by the representatives of Rosatom State Corporation, Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC, IAEA, WANO, scientific and research, and design organizations of Russia, CIS, Eastern and Western Europe, other regions of the world, different Russian and foreign large enterprises of the nuclear power generation industry.

First Deputy General Director of Rosenergoatom Concern Vladimir Asmolov in his speech noted that despite of the environment conditions, 2011 was generally productive both for the Russian nuclear power generation industry and Rosenergoatom Concern.
In particular, there has been ensured the safe operation of units of nuclear power plants, achieved a new record for electricity production, which has reached a historical peak Р 172,7 billion kWh, also there has been reached the maximum capacity of one-time generation Р 25 GW. ТWell, the startup of Kalinin 4 is unconditioned success of the Concern and all the nuclear power generation industry,У stressed Vladimir Asmolov.

He also said that the available total was planned in the amount of 175,8 billion kWh that year, which, according to First Deputy General Director of Rosenergoatom, was a very ambitious goal taking into account the ageing and continuous upgrading of units. ТDue to this, there takes place the ongoing optimization of the repair works, works underway to improve the efficiency output of the second circuit of nuclear power plants, capacity of units, as well as activities on extending the lifetime and improving the management structure,У told V. Asmolov.

Commenting on the results of the post-Fukushima activities implemented by Rosenergoatom Concern, Vladimir Grigoriyevich noted that the peak of costs of measures for safety improvement had already passed, and all the additional equipment necessary for nuclear power plants Р mobile diesel generators and pumping units Р had already been purchased.

Looking back, in connection with the events at Fukushima NPP (Japan) in 2011, there has been carried out an additional inspection of the functional nuclear power plantsХ status for the compliance with the projects, standards and rules; there has been conducted an analysis of resistance of the protection in depth of operating NPPs and NPPs under construction to the external extreme impacts, and developed extra measures to ensure their safety.

The International Sci-Tech Conference will last two days more, on May 25 its work will be summed up.

Also on the last day of MNTK-2012, in the building of RIA NOVOSTI (Russian International News Agency), there will be held a press-conference with the participation of Heads of the Concern.

Rosenergoatom Concern includes all 10 nuclear power plants of Russia, which have the status of the branches of the Concern, as well as the enterprises ensuring the activity of the power generating company.

In total, at 10 NPPs of Russia, there are operated 33 power units: 17 power units have VVER model reactors (among them 11 units have VVER-1000 model reactors, and 6 units have VVER-440 model reactors of various modifications); 15 units have pressurized-tube reactors (11 units - RBMK-1000 model reactors, four units - EGP-6 model reactors); 1 unit has the fast fission sodium cooled reactor BN-600.

The electric power generation rate of the nuclear power plants of Russia amounts to 16,6 %.
