Kursk NPP: the public hearings on the materials substantiating operation of SNF container storage and handling system complex have been held

On January 25, 2005 in Kurchatov city (Kursk region) the public hearings on the materials substantiating operation of the SNF container storage and handling system complex  were held. The materials included parameters of the region of NPP location ecologic condition, estimates of the influence of the Complex operation on the environment, and measures for its protection. 

According to Nikolay Sorokin, Nuclear Plant Director, the main function of the complex is up-to-date preparation of nuclear fuel for intermediate storage at Kursk NPP site and its removal from Kursk region territory. ТKursk NPP does not construct additional storages. The complex on SNF handling is provided for KNPP only and aimed at transfer of the SNF produced in the process of its units operation to temporary container storage, with further transfer to special recycling plantsУ Р Nikolay Sorokin noticed.

The district citizens, representatives of the executive and legislation branches of Kursk region and municipal establishments adjacent to the NPP and as well as of enterprises, public organizations, educational establishment, Mass Media took part in the public hearings held in accordance with the legislation.

Within a month prior to beginning of the hearings the citizens had an opportunity of getting acquainted with the materials prepared by Kursk NPP for State Ecological Examination. Those who wanted had prepared questions, made comments and proposals. With them they appeared in the hearings. The participants expressed assurance in the fact that Kursk NPP staff, Rosenergoatom Concern will provide safe operation of the SNF handling and container storage system complex.

Within 30 days after the public hearings are over the citizens and public organizations can add comments and suggestions into the materials.
