A regular action as part of the All-Russian Environmental Marathon ТThe Green Belt
of Atomic CitiesУ, dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Rosenergoatom Concern, was held on
September 14, 2012 in Kurchatov - the city of Kursk nuclear engineers.



Since 2009 the environmental marathon has been held in the satellite cities of nuclear
power plants. Its primary objectives are: the demonstration of the social responsibility of the
State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom and Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC on the regional
placements of nuclear power plants, development of the environmental awareness of public,
and introduction of the long-term activities of Kurchatov city and Kursk NPP on environmental
protection measures to the participants.

This time the environmental action was aimed at restoration of the green plantation on
the Avenue of Nuclear Scientists. This avenue was laid in 2010 by representatives of all nuclear
power plants of Russia and immediately decorated the city of Kurchatov.

Opening the event, Chairman of the trade union committee of Kursk nuclear power plant,
Vyacheslav Stepanov, said: ТTodayХs environmental marathon has already become traditional,
and each year it involves more and more employees of the nuclear power plant. Environment
protection is one of the priorities of our enterprise. Today we do not just restore the Avenue of
Nuclear Scientists, but this way we also bring up a new generation of Kurchatov citizens.У

Traditionally such environmental events are attended not only by employees of NPP, but
also by residents of Kurchatov of different age. Many come with their families to decorate their
favorite city making it greener and cleaner. In addition, representatives of the youth organization
of the nuclear power plant, pupils of the city schools, students of Kurchatov branch of Kursk
State Polytechnic College and veterans of the nuclear power plant took part in the action.

All the participants of the environmental action, armed with spades, rakes and buckets,
took their places together and the work has begun. In a relatively short period of time, a large
area was cleaned of debris, twigs and leaves, those trees, which hadnХt taken the roots or were
broken, and the Avenue of Nuclear Scientists was continued with the planted limes and birches.
Also the previous plantings have been restored. Only that day there was planted about 100 trees,
which, no doubt, have decorated the autumn city.

At the end of the action, pupils addressed to all residents of the city through the local
television with the request to protect the young plants, not to spoil them, but on the contrary Р to
maintain the green plants, take care of them and decorate the city.

At the present time, Kursk NPP operates the power units No.1, 2 and 4. The units work at
the capacity rated by the dispatch schedule. Unit 3 is under the scheduled midlife maintenance
from September 1 of the current year.

The radiation background in the area of Kursk NPP and the adjacent territory
corresponds to the level of power unitsХ normal operation and does not exceed the natural
environmental values.
