Kalinin NPP Starts Stage of Pilot Operation of Unit 4

On May 9, 2012 Kalinin 4 started the stage of ТPilot OperationУ, which is the final part of set of works on the NPP unit commissioning.

A team of startup management under the guidance of the Director of the Kalinin nuclear power plant Mikhail Kanyshev, having examined the acts of the working committee on the completion of works at the stage of ТEnergy StartupУ, and on the availability for the stage of ТPilot OperationУ, as well as the act of the targeted inspection of the Government Safety Regulatory Agencies in nuclear energy use, has recognized as admissible Тto consider Unit 4 as accepted for pilot operation, and to start carrying out works in accordance with the staged program.У

The transition to a pilot operation was preceded by the targeted inspection of the Russian Federal Service for Environmental, Engineering and Nuclear Supervision (Rostekhnadzor). The stage of pilot operation provides for gradual increase of the unitХs capacity up to the nominal (designed) 100% level, and completion of the set of dynamic tests of systems and the unit in general in stationary and transient states. The results of tests shall confirm the design parameters of reliability and safety.

The stage of pilot operation will be completed by delivery tests, in which the unit will operate at the nominal capacity during 72 hours, and by commissioning, which is scheduled for September 30, 2012.

Kalinin NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern OJSC. The Plant is situated on the north of the Tver Region in Udomelsk district. Kalinin NPP includes four power units with pressurized water reactors (VVER-1000) each one having the installed capacity of 1,000 MW. Implementation of a multistage program of the energy start-up continues its realization on the 4th power unit, which start-up took place on November 2011.
