A unique operation on the additional safety systemХs major elements installation has been completed at the Kolsk NPP

The Kolsk NPP team has completed a unique operation on installing the major elements of the additional safety system, which is a passive emergency core cooling system (ECCS). Each of the four ECCS units weighing 61 tons has been installed at their designed spots.

These units are the elements of the passive emergency core cooling system that includes four accumulators fillable with a water solution of boric acid. Each accumulator is a thick-walled steel vessel with a volume of 60 cubic meters.

This passive system runs unattended and without any external power supply sources. If the pressure in the first circuit drops below a certain level, the boric-containing water is automatically transmitted into the reactor to cool the reactor core.

Vasiliy Omelchuk, the Kolsk NPP director, noted that the installation of the accumulators is an important step in the process of installing the additional safety system carried out as a part of the works related to the Kolsk NPPХs 1st power block life extension.

ТAt the moment, this facility is the main construction site of the Kolsk nuclear power plant. All the works were completed timely and with a proper quality thanks to the top-notch professionals representing the installation company, the railway district, and the Kolsk NPPУ, Mr. Omelchuk commented.

The Kolsk NPP is an affiliate of Rosenergoatom Concern JSC and is based 200 km to the south from the city of Murmansk, at the Imandra lakeside. The plant produces around 60% of the Murmansk Region electric power. It has 4 operational power blocks with VVER-type reactors, each of them having capacity of 440 megawatt. The Kolsk NPP supplies electric power to the Murmansk Region and Karelia.
