Rosenergoatom organized two virtual tours for the participants of the 65th IAEA General Conference

On September 23-24, 2021, at two Russian NPPs (branches of Rosenergoatom, part of the Electric Power Division of Rosatom State Corporation) there were virtual technical tours for representatives of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who gathered in Vienna (Austria) during the 65th General Conference.

More than fifty foreign and Russian specialists from various spheres related to the use of atomic energy took part in the online tours. And if for the Leningrad NPP it was already the fourth virtual technical tour organized for foreign partners, then for the Beloyarsk NPP such an event was held for the first time.

“Today the interest in the Beloyarsk NPP, the only nuclear power plant in the world with fast neutron power units (FN), is very high, so using online tools is a good way to share our technologies with as many international experts as possible. Our operational experience will allow us to make the transition to a new technological platform - two-component nuclear power with a closed nuclear fuel cycle, which will multiply the fuel base and resolve issues related to discharged fuel management,” said Ivan Sidorov, director of the Beloyarsk NPP.

The participants of the IAEA international conference, being thousands of kilometers away, could visit the reactor hall of the innovative PWR-1200 power unit of the Leningrad NPP, as well as see the power unit No. 4 with the world's most powerful fast neutron reactor FN-800 of the Beloyarsk NPP. With the help of 3D-scanning technology of the space, which gives a feeling of complete immersion in the production process, they saw how the equipment of nuclear power plants operates.

The restrictions caused by the Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) have become a driver for the development of new communication formats with a foreign audience, and today specialists of the Russian nuclear industry provide a unique opportunity to visit Russian nuclear power plants online, literally from the screen of their personal device. In the conditions of the ongoing pandemic and closed borders, such technologies allow nuclear scientists to acquaint their foreign colleagues and business partners in detail with the basic principles of operation of modern Russian power units and those innovative solutions that are used today in the nuclear power industry of Russia.

Applications for virtual tours have already been sent by a number of countries in which Russian-designed power units are being built or planned for construction, as well as a number of specialized technical universities.

For reference:

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), created within the United Nations, is the main international body regulating global cooperation in the sphere of peaceful nuclear energy. The Agency collects scientific and technical information and facilitates its exchange, develops nuclear and radiation safety standards, using a staff of international inspectors to regularly check the peaceful nuclear activities of states (more than 900 facilities around the world). The General Conference, attended by the delegations of all member states, is called once a year to consider and approve the annual report submitted to the UN, the draft budget, as well as to elect and appoint members of the Governing Council and discuss other issues related to the activities of the organization.
